What are Dulcolax tablets?

Dulcolax Adult Tablets are intended for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. These tablets contain bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative that promotes increased bowel movements. It’s important to note that this medication is not designed for weight loss

What is the active ingredient in Dulcolax tablets?

The active ingredients contained in this medicine is: Bisacodyl 5mg.

What are Dulcolax tablets used for?

Dulcolax Tablets provide fast-acting relief from short-term, occasional constipation. Each tablet contains 5mg of bisacodyl, a clinically-tested active ingredient known as a stimulant laxative. Bisacodyl works by stimulating bowel movements, helping to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of constipation within a few hours. Dulcolax suppositories, manufactured by SANOFI, are designed specifically for treating constipation in adults for up to 5 days. What is constipation? Constipation is a common condition affecting people of all ages, characterized by infrequent bowel movements and dry, hard, or lumpy stools that can be difficult to pass. It can cause discomfort, bloating, nausea, and even pain during bowel movements. Common causes of constipation include:
  • A diet low in fiber
  • Insufficient water intake
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Ignoring the urge to go to the toilet
  • Side effects of certain medications

How do Dulcolax tablets work?

Dulcolax tablets contain the active ingredient bisacodyl, which is a stimulant laxative specifically designed to relieve constipation. Bisacodyl works by stimulating the muscles in the intestines, promoting more rapid bowel movements. This action helps to temporarily increase bowel activity, making it easier and more comfortable to pass hard, lumpy, or large stools. By encouraging regular bowel movements, Dulcolax helps alleviate the discomfort associated with constipation, offering a reliable solution for those experiencing infrequent or difficult-to-pass stools. This makes it an effective option for restoring digestive regularity and easing constipation symptoms.

How do you take Dulcolax tablets?

Always take this medication exactly as directed in this leaflet or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are unsure about the instructions, consult your pharmacist. For Constipation:
  • Adults (including the elderly): Take 1 to 2 tablets at night.
    • Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not chew or crush them.
    • Avoid taking milk, antacids, or proton pump inhibitors (medications that reduce stomach acid) within one hour before or after taking Dulcolax Adult Tablets, as these can interfere with the effectiveness of the medication.
If you are using Dulcolax Adult Tablets for the first time, start with one tablet. You may increase the dose to two tablets if necessary. Once your bowel movements return to normal, you can stop taking the tablets. Length of Treatment: Do not use these tablets daily for more than 5 days. If you find you need laxatives every day, consult your doctor to determine the underlying cause of your constipation. Overuse of laxatives can be harmful. If You Take More Dulcolax Adult Tablets Than Recommended: Taking too many Dulcolax Adult Tablets or using them for an extended period can be harmful and may lead to:
  • An imbalance of fluids and salts in the body, which can affect muscle function, including the muscles in the bowel, and disturb blood electrolyte levels.
  • Low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia), which may cause fatigue, dizziness, muscle weakness, and an irregular heartbeat.
  • Dehydration, leading to symptoms such as thirst, faintness, headaches, and reduced urine output.
If you accidentally take more than the recommended dose, seek medical advice immediately by contacting a doctor or visiting a hospital. Bring the medication packaging with you so that the healthcare provider knows what you have taken. If you have any questions about using this product, consult your pharmacist or doctor.

Who should not take Dulcolax tablets?

Do Not Take Dulcolax Adult Tablets If:

  • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to bisacodyl or any of the other ingredients in this product (refer to Section 6: Contents of the pack and other information).
  • You have an intolerance to or difficulty digesting certain sugars, as these tablets contain a small amount of lactose and sucrose.
  • You have severe dehydration.
  • You have a bowel condition called "ileus" (a blockage in the intestine).
  • You have a serious abdominal condition, such as appendicitis.
  • You are experiencing severe abdominal pain accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
  • You have a blocked bowel (intestinal obstruction).
  • You have inflammation of the bowel (either small or large intestine).
If any of the above conditions apply to you, do not take this medication. Dulcolax Adult Tablets are not recommended for use in individuals under 18 years of age. If you are unsure whether this medicine is suitable for you, consult your pharmacist or doctor before use.

Does This Help with Weight Loss?

Stimulant laxatives, including bisacodyl, are not effective for weight loss. They do not reduce the absorption of calories or nutrients. While they may cause watery stools (diarrhea), abdominal cramps, and dehydration, any apparent weight loss is likely due to fluid loss rather than fat loss. Overusing laxatives can harm your health by:
  • Causing electrolyte and mineral imbalances: Sodium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus are essential electrolytes and minerals needed in precise amounts for the proper functioning of nerves and muscles, including those in the colon and heart. Disrupting this balance can impair the function of these vital organs.
  • Leading to severe dehydration: This can cause symptoms such as tremors, weakness, blurred vision, fainting, kidney damage, and, in extreme cases, death. Dehydration often requires medical treatment.
  • Damaging intestinal function: Overuse of laxatives can harm your digestive system and should be avoided.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking Dulcolax Adult Tablets.

Driving and Using Machines

Some people may experience dizziness or faintness while taking this medicine. If you feel dizzy or faint, wait until these sensations pass before driving or operating machinery.

Dulcolax Adult Tablets Contain Lactose and Sucrose

These tablets contain small amounts of lactose and sucrose. Patients with rare hereditary conditions such as fructose intolerance, galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not use this medicine. If you have an intolerance to certain sugars, consult your doctor before taking this medication.

What are the side effects with Dulcolax tablets?

Like all medications, Dulcolax Adult Tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. If you encounter any of the following side effects, stop taking the medication and seek medical attention immediately:

Rare side effects (affecting fewer than 1 in 1,000 people):

  • Severe allergic reactions that may cause swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or dizziness. If you experience a severe allergic reaction, stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away.

  • Dehydration.
  • Allergic reactions that may result in a skin rash.
  • Fainting.

Reporting of Side Effects

You can also report side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme at www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard or by searching for "MHRA Yellow Card" in the Google Play or Apple App Store. Reporting side effects helps provide more information on the safety of this medicine.

Do Dulcolax tablets interact with other medicines?

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or may take any other medications. This is important because Dulcolax Adult Tablets can interact with other medicines, potentially affecting how they work. Likewise, certain medications can influence the effectiveness of Dulcolax Adult Tablets. In particular, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking:
  • Diuretics (water tablets): such as bendrofluazide or furosemide (frusemide)
  • Steroid medications: such as prednisolone
  • Other laxatives
If you are unsure whether any of the above applies to you, consult your pharmacist or doctor before taking Dulcolax Adult Tablets.

Dulcolax suppositories, manufactured by SANOFI, are specifically designed to treat constipation in adults for up to 5 days. What Is Constipation? Constipation is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. It results in reduced bowel movements and leads to dry, hard, and lumpy stools that can be difficult and painful to pass. Constipation can cause discomfort, bloating, nausea, and pain when trying to pass stool. Common causes of constipation include:

How Do Dulcolax Tablets Work? Dulcolax Tablets contain bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative that helps relieve constipation by stimulating the muscles in the bowels. This increases bowel activity, making it easier and more comfortable to pass hard, lumpy, or large stools. What Are the Alternatives to Dulcolax Tablets? Simple dietary and lifestyle changes can often help prevent and relieve mild, occasional constipation. These changes include:
  • Drinking more non-alcoholic fluids
  • Increasing dietary fiber intake
  • Getting more exercise and staying active throughout the day
If these changes do not improve your constipation, other types of laxatives might be more suitable:
  • Bulk-forming Laxatives: These increase the weight of the stool and usually take 2-3 days to work, such as Fybogel.
  • Osmotic Laxatives: These draw water into the stool to soften it and also take 2-3 days to work, such as Lactulose or Movicol.
