What is Betnovate Scalp Application?

Betnovate Scalp Application is a prescription-only topical medication designed to treat scalp conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline UK, it contains the active ingredient betamethasone valerate 0.1%, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and irritation.

This solution is applied twice daily to dry, flaky, irritated, or inflamed areas of the scalp to alleviate redness, itching, and discomfort. It can be used in conjunction with scalp moisturizers and emollients to help manage scalp eczema and soothe alopecia.

For those experiencing an itchy, irritated scalp without a diagnosis, possible causes include dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, allergic reactions, tinea capitis, eczema, folliculitis, or head lice. To determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment, consult our UK-based medical team.

What is the active ingredient in Betnovate Scalp Application?

The active ingredient in Betnovate Scalp Application is betamethasone valerate 0.1%.

What is Betanovate Scalp Application used for?

Betnovate Scalp Application (referred to as 'Betnovate' in this leaflet) contains the active ingredient betamethasone valerate, a type of steroid that helps reduce swelling and irritation. Betnovate is used to alleviate redness and itchiness associated with specific scalp conditions, including psoriasis and dermatitis. What Betnovate Scalp Application is Used For: Betnovate Scalp Application is primarily used to treat inflammatory conditions of the scalp such as:
  • Psoriasis: A condition characterized by red, scaly patches on the skin.
  • Dermatitis: Inflammation of the skin that causes itchiness and redness.
By reducing inflammation and irritation, Betnovate helps to soothe these conditions, providing relief from symptoms and improving the overall health of the scalp.

How does Betnovate Scalp Application work?

Betamethasone, the active ingredient in Betnovate Scalp, is a corticosteroid applied topically to areas showing symptoms of redness, irritation, or inflammation. Classified as a 'potent' (strong) steroid, proper dosage is crucial. It is effective in treating chronic conditions where weaker treatments have failed. Betamethasone is absorbed through the skin and blocks the release of inflammatory chemicals that cause severe eczema symptoms. While beneficial, Betnovate Scalp Application is not meant for everyday use. It should be used to manage acute flare-ups of folliculitis or eczema on the scalp, where the skin becomes very dry, itchy, or flaky (sometimes leading to dandruff). For day-to-day maintenance, use moisturizers or emollients to keep the skin in good condition, especially for chronic conditions. Always follow the usage and application instructions provided in the enclosed leaflet carefully.

Corticosteroid creams, ointments, and other topical preparations come in four different potencies: mild, moderately potent, potent, or very potent. Healthcare professionals typically refer to the potency of topical corticosteroids rather than their strength. A potent corticosteroid has a much stronger effect than a mild corticosteroid when used in the same amount. The percentage of the active ingredient listed on product packaging does not indicate potency. Betnovate Scalp Application is classified as a potent corticosteroid. Your healthcare professional will prescribe or recommend a corticosteroid of the appropriate potency for your condition. Reporting of Side Effects If you experience any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme at: www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard or search for MHRA Yellow Card in the Google Play or Apple App Store. By reporting side effects, you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
