What is Skinoren cream?

Skinoren is a topical cream designed to treat acne. Its active ingredient, azelaic acid, works in two ways: it reduces the growth of keratin skin cells that can block pores and sebaceous glands, leading to breakouts, and it kills the bacteria on your skin that can cause acne.

What is the active ingredient in Skinoren cream?

Skinoren cream contains the following active ingredients: azelaic acid 20% w/w

What is Skinoren cream used for?

Skinoren is used in the treatment of mild to severe acne, a common skin condition that affects around 1 in 3 adults in the UK. It causes oily skin, spots, crusting, and often scarring. While more prevalent in young people, many adults experience acne later in life. Skinoren helps to prevent and reduce acne breakouts by killing acne-causing bacteria and stopping the growth of keratinocytes that clog pores, resulting in clearer, less oily skin. Skinoren cream is sometimes used to treat acne scars, rosacea, and dark spots. It offers many benefits: reducing inflammation, soothing and moisturizing the skin, improving microcirculation, and lessening localized redness. Research also suggests that it may help treat hair loss (alopecia) in men and women. Medicalmojo.co.uk also stocks Finacea, another azelaic acid product, which is used to treat mild to moderate acne and rosacea.

How does Skinoren cream work?

Skinoren contains the active ingredient azelaic acid, a naturally-occurring compound that treats acne symptoms in two ways:
  1. Reducing the Growth of Keratin Surface Skin Cells: Keratin skin cells can mix with sebum (an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands) to form plugs that block pores, leading to spot formation. By reducing the growth of keratin cells, azelaic acid helps prevent these pore-blocking plugs from forming.
  2. Killing Acne-Associated Bacteria: Common bacteria, such as Propionibacterium acnes, trigger the production of waste products and fatty acids that irritate the sebaceous glands, causing infection and inflammation. Azelaic acid decreases the number of these bacteria by reducing the sebum on which they feed, allowing the skin to heal naturally.
Additionally, azelaic acid can lighten the skin by affecting melanin production, making it useful for treating hyperpigmentation or dark underarm skin.

How do you use Skinoren cream?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has instructed. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. Adults and Adolescents (12 – 18 years of age)
  1. Thoroughly wash the entire area to be treated with plain water. If the skin is greasy, use a mild skin cleanser. Dry the skin thoroughly before applying Skinoren.
  2. Unless advised otherwise by your doctor, start treatment with Skinoren twice a day.
  3. If your skin is very sensitive, use Skinoren once a day in the evening during the first week of treatment. Then switch to twice a day.
  4. The amount of Skinoren you should use will depend on the size of the area to be treated:
    • As a guide, if the whole of your face is affected, use 2.5 cm (approx. 0.5 g) of cream each time you apply Skinoren.
    • If you have acne on your chest and back, as well as your face, adjust the amount of cream accordingly.
Use the cream regularly and rub it in gently. Wash your hands thoroughly after using Skinoren. The duration of Skinoren use varies from person to person and depends on the severity of your acne when you start treatment. You should see a noticeable improvement after about 4 weeks. For the best effect, you will likely need to use Skinoren regularly for several months. However, you should not use Skinoren for more than 12 months at a time. If you have any further questions about using this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not use Skinoren cream?

Do not use Skinoren if:

  • You are allergic to azelaic acid or any of the other ingredients in this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and precautions:

  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Skinoren.

  • Rarely, some patients with asthma have reported a worsening of asthma symptoms when treated with azelaic acid.
  • Skinoren is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age due to insufficient data on safety and efficacy.

Pregnancy and Breast-feeding: There is limited experience with the use of azelaic acid during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine. Infants must not come into contact with treated skin or breast.
