What is Flixonase?

Flixonase Aqueous Nasal Spray contains the active ingredient fluticasone propionate, a type of corticosteroid (steroid). Corticosteroids work by reducing inflammation, which helps to relieve swelling and irritation in the nasal passages. This action effectively alleviates common allergy symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and a blocked or runny nose. Flixonase is used to treat and prevent allergic rhinitis, providing relief from both seasonal and year-round allergies through its anti-inflammatory effects.

What is the active ingredient in Flixonase?

The active ingredient in Flixonase Nasal Spray is Fluticasone propionate.

What is Flixonase use for?

Flixonase nasal spray is designed to treat both seasonal and perennial allergies, commonly known as allergic rhinitis, including hay fever. While allergic rhinitis is not curable, its symptoms can be effectively managed with the right treatment. Steroid nasal sprays like Flixonase work by inhibiting the immune system's inflammatory response to allergens, preventing symptoms such as sneezing, itchiness, and a blocked or runny nose. Allergic rhinitis occurs due to an overactive immune system. When harmless allergens, like pollen, pet fur, dust mites, or mold spores, enter the nasal passages, the immune system mistakenly identifies them as harmful invaders, similar to viruses. In response, the body produces excess mucus, leading to allergy symptoms. In addition to relieving nasal symptoms, Flixonase spray can also help alleviate eye-related allergy symptoms. It may take a few days for Flixonase to reach its full effectiveness, so it's recommended to start treatment a few days before exposure to allergens like pollen if possible.

How does Flixonase work?

Flixonase works by utilizing its active ingredient, fluticasone propionate, which is a corticosteroid (a type of steroid). Corticosteroids are known for their powerful anti-inflammatory properties. When you use Flixonase nasal spray, the fluticasone propionate is absorbed into the cells in the lining of your nasal passages. It works by inhibiting the release of certain chemicals that trigger inflammation, such as histamines and cytokines. These chemicals are typically released by the immune system in response to allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold spores. By reducing the inflammation, Flixonase helps to decrease the swelling and irritation in the nasal passages. This action effectively relieves common allergy symptoms such as:
  • Sneezing
  • Itchiness in the nose
  • Blocked or stuffy nose
  • Runny nose
Additionally, Flixonase can help alleviate related eye symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes. Because it acts locally in the nasal passages, Flixonase minimizes the systemic side effects that can occur with oral corticosteroids. However, it usually takes a few days of consistent use to reach its full therapeutic effect, making it important to use the spray regularly during allergy season or when you anticipate exposure to allergens.

How do you use Flixonase?

Always use this medication exactly as directed by your doctor. If you are unsure about how to use it, consult your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.
  • Do not use this medication in children under 4 years old.
  • Only use the spray in your nose, and avoid contact with your eyes.
  • It may take a few days for this medication to start working, so continue using it even if you don't feel immediate relief.
  • Use the spray consistently every day.
Dosage for Adults and Children (12 years and older):
  • The usual starting dose is 2 sprays into each nostril once a day, preferably in the morning.
  • The maximum recommended dose in 24 hours is 8 sprays (4 sprays per nostril).
  • As symptoms improve, your doctor may reduce your dose to 1 spray into each nostril once a day.
  • If your symptoms worsen, your dose may be increased back to the starting dose.
Dosage for Children Aged 4 to 11 Years:
  • The usual starting dose is 1 spray into each nostril once a day, preferably in the morning.
  • The maximum recommended dose in 24 hours is 4 sprays (2 sprays per nostril).
If You Use High Doses of Flixonase:
  • You may need additional steroids during times of extreme stress, following a serious accident or injury, or before surgery.
  • Your doctor may prescribe extra steroid medication, such as tablets or an injection.
Preparing Your Spray:
  • Each spray bottle has a dust cap to protect the nozzle and keep it clean. Always remove the cap before use.
  • If the spray is new or hasn’t been used for a few days, it may need to be "primed." Pump the spray a few times until a fine mist is produced.
  1. Hold the bottle as shown, with the nozzle pointed away from you.
  2. Place your forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle, with your thumb under the bottle.
  3. Keep your thumb steady and press down with your fingers to pump the spray.
  4. If the spray isn’t working and you suspect it’s blocked, you’ll need to clean it. Refer to the "Cleaning your spray" section below.
  5. Never attempt to unblock or enlarge the tiny spray hole with a pin or other sharp object, as this will damage the spray mechanism.
  6. Using Your Spray:
    1. Shake the bottle well and remove the dust cap.
    2. Gently blow your nose to clear your nostrils.
    3. Close one nostril with your finger, and insert the nozzle into the other nostril. Tilt your head slightly forward and keep the bottle upright, holding it as shown in the instructions.
    4. Begin to slowly breathe in through your nose. As you breathe in, press down firmly on the collar with your fingers to release a fine mist into your nostril.
    5. Breathe out through your mouth.
    6. Repeat step 4 to apply a second spray in the same nostril.
    7. Remove the nozzle from your nostril and breathe out through your mouth.
    8. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for your other nostril.
    9. After using the spray, carefully wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue or handkerchief, and replace the dust cap.
Cleaning Your Spray: Clean your spray at least once a week, or more frequently if it becomes blocked.
    1. Remove the dust cap by gently squeezing the ribbed sides between your finger and thumb and lifting it off. Do not twist it off.
    2. Pull upwards on the white collar to remove the nozzle.
    3. Soak the nozzle and dust cap in warm water for a few minutes.
    4. Rinse them thoroughly under running water.
    5. Shake off any excess water and allow them to dry in a warm place.
    6. Reattach the nozzle to the spray bottle.
    7. 'Prime' the bottle again as outlined in the "Preparing Your Spray" section above.
If you use more Flixonase than recommended: Inform your doctor if you have used more than the prescribed amount. It's crucial to follow the dosage instructions on the pharmacist’s label or as directed by your doctor. Using more or less than recommended may worsen your symptoms. If you forget to use Flixonase: If you miss a dose, simply take the next dose at the usual time. Do not double up on doses to compensate for the missed one. If you stop using Flixonase: Continue using Flixonase as directed by your doctor, even if you start feeling better. Stopping the treatment suddenly may cause your symptoms to return. Always consult your doctor before discontinuing the medication. If you have any further questions about using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not use Flixonase?

Do not use Flixonase if:
  • You are allergic to fluticasone propionate or any other ingredients in this medicine, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

Taking Flixonase with food and drink: You can use Flixonase at any time of the day, with or without food. What are the side effects of Flixonase?

Like all medicines, Flixonase can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. The following side effects may occur: Allergic reactions: Seek immediate medical attention A small number of people may experience allergic reactions to Flixonase, which can become serious or even life-threatening if not treated promptly. • Sudden weakness or light-headedness, which may lead to collapse or loss of consciousness
  • Swelling around the face, mouth, or tongue
  • Skin rashes or redness
If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately as you may require urgent medical treatment. Allergic reactions to Flixonase are very rare (affecting less than 1 in 10,000 people). Immediately after using your spray:
