What is Finacea gel?

Finacea Gel is a topical treatment primarily used to manage the symptoms of rosacea, a chronic skin condition that causes redness, pimples, and visible blood vessels on the face. The active ingredient in Finacea Gel is azelaic acid, which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Azelaic acid helps to reduce the redness and swelling associated with rosacea, clear up existing pimples, and prevent new ones from forming. Finacea Gel is typically applied to the affected areas twice a day, and consistent use can lead to noticeable improvements in the appearance of the skin over time. It is prescribed for adults and is often recommended for individuals with mild to moderate rosacea.

What is the active ingredient in Finacea gel?

The active ingredient contained in Finacea is: Azelaic Acid 15%.

What is Finacea gel used for?

Finacea 15% Gel contains the active ingredient azelaic acid and is classified as a topical treatment for skin conditions, specifically targeting acne and rosacea. It is used to alleviate mild to moderate papulopustular acne on the face, as well as to treat papulopustular rosacea. Both conditions are characterized by the presence of inflamed papules (small, raised bumps) and pustules (pus-filled lesions). Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red, pus-filled bumps. Over time, these symptoms can become more pronounced, leading to discomfort and skin irritation. Finacea Gel works by reducing inflammation and combating the bacteria associated with these conditions, helping to clear the skin and prevent further breakouts.

How does Finacea gel work?

Finacea Gel works primarily through its active ingredient, azelaic acid, which has both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Here's how it helps treat conditions like rosacea and acne:
  1. Reduces Inflammation: Azelaic acid helps to calm inflammation in the skin, which is a key factor in both rosacea and acne. By reducing inflammation, it helps to decrease redness, swelling, and the formation of papules and pustules.
  2. Fights Bacteria: The gel has antibacterial effects that target the bacteria associated with acne, such as Propionibacterium acnes. By reducing bacterial growth on the skin, Finacea helps to prevent and treat breakouts.
  3. Unclogs Pores: Azelaic acid helps to normalize the skin’s keratinization process, which means it prevents the build-up of dead skin cells that can block pores and lead to acne. This action helps to clear existing pimples and prevent new ones from forming.
  4. Improves Skin Texture: Over time, Finacea Gel can help to improve the overall texture and appearance of the skin, reducing the visible signs of rosacea and acne, such as bumps and uneven skin tone.
By combining these effects, Finacea Gel effectively treats mild to moderate cases of rosacea and acne, leading to clearer, healthier-looking skin with consistent use.

How do you use Finacea gel?

Always use this medication exactly as directed by your doctor. If you are unsure about anything, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Usage Instructions:

  • External Use Only: Finacea is intended for application on the skin only.
  • Before Application: Clean the affected area thoroughly with water and dry the skin. You may use a mild cleanser if needed.
  • Application: Do not use occlusive (air- and water-tight) dressings or wrappings. After applying the gel, wash your hands.
  • Dosage: Apply Finacea to the affected areas twice daily, in the morning and evening. Gently rub in approximately 2.5 cm (about 0.5 g or 1 inch) of gel, which is enough for the entire face.
  • Consistency: Finacea works best when used consistently over the prescribed period.

Managing Skin Irritation:

If you experience skin irritation, you may need to reduce the amount of gel or decrease the frequency of application to once a day until the irritation subsides. If necessary, you may pause treatment for a few days.

Use in Children and Adolescents:

No dose adjustment is necessary for children aged 12-18 years being treated for acne.

Duration of Treatment:

The length of time you should use Finacea varies depending on your condition and its severity. Your doctor will advise you on the appropriate duration of treatment.
  • Acne: You can use Finacea for several months, depending on how well it works. Generally, you should see improvement after 4 weeks. If there is no improvement after 1 month or if your acne worsens, discontinue use and consult your doctor.
  • Rosacea: Finacea can also be used for several months for rosacea treatment. Improvement is typically noticeable after 4 weeks. If there is no improvement after 2 months or if your rosacea worsens, stop using Finacea and speak with your doctor.

If You Use More Finacea Than Prescribed:

Accidentally using more Finacea than recommended is unlikely to cause harm. Continue using the gel as prescribed, and consult your doctor if you are unsure.

If You Forget to Use Finacea:

Do not double the dose to make up for a missed application. Simply continue using it as directed by your doctor.

If You Stop Using Finacea:

If you stop using Finacea, your skin condition may worsen. Always consult your doctor before discontinuing the treatment. If you have any further questions about using Finacea, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not use Finacea gel?

Do Not Use Finacea If:

  • You are allergic to azelaic acid or any of the other ingredients in this medication, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

Warnings and Precautions:

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Finacea.
  • External Use Only: Finacea is intended for use on the skin only.
  • Avoid Contact: Take care to avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes (such as around body openings). If accidental contact occurs, rinse the affected area thoroughly with plenty of water. Seek medical advice if eye irritation persists.
  • Hand Hygiene: Wash your hands after each application of Finacea.
  • Avoid Certain Products: While using Finacea for the treatment of rosacea, it’s advisable to avoid using products containing alcohol, tinctures, astringents, abrasives, and peeling agents.
  • Asthma Patients: In rare cases, worsening of asthma symptoms has been reported in patients treated with azelaic acid.

Use in Children and Adolescents:

  • Acne Treatment: Safety and effectiveness in treating acne have been studied in adolescents aged 12-18 years. Finacea is not recommended for children under 12 years old due to insufficient data on safety and efficacy.
  • Rosacea Treatment: Finacea is not recommended for treating rosacea in children under 18 years old due to a lack of safety and efficacy data.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

  • There is limited experience with the use of azelaic acid during pregnancy. Your doctor will determine whether you can use Finacea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Infants should not come into contact with skin that has been treated with Finacea or with treated areas of the breast.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.

  • Finacea does not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Ingredients of Note:

  • Benzoic Acid: Finacea Gel contains 1 mg of benzoic acid per gram, which may cause local irritation.
  • Propylene Glycol: Finacea Gel contains 120 mg of propylene glycol per gram, which may also cause skin irritation.
Like all medications, Finacea can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Finacea gel FAQs

What is Finacea Gel?

Finacea Gel is a prescription-only treatment designed to manage mild to moderate facial acne and rosacea. It contains the active ingredient azelaic acid, which helps eliminate bacteria responsible for these skin conditions. By doing so, Finacea improves skin texture, reduces blemishes, and promotes a more even skin tone. This gel is recommended for adults over 18 who have not had success with other topical treatments. It should be applied directly to affected areas twice daily, with noticeable results typically seen after a month of consistent use.

What is Finacea Gel used for?

Finacea Gel is primarily used to treat rosacea, a skin condition that causes redness, swelling, and a bumpy rash on the face. Although common, affecting 1 in 10 people, rosacea has no known cure and often flares up due to triggers like stress, alcohol, and certain weather conditions. Finacea helps to manage these flare-ups by unblocking pores and reducing inflammation. Additionally, Finacea is effective in treating mild to moderate acne by targeting the bacteria responsible for breakouts, leading to a clearer complexion with fewer flare-ups.

How does Finacea work?

Finacea Gel works by inhibiting the production and growth of keratin surface skin cells that clog pores, which is a common cause of acne and rosacea. The azelaic acid in Finacea helps to unblock pores and sebaceous glands, reducing the likelihood of papules, pustules, and spots. Additionally, it kills the bacteria associated with these conditions, further preventing irritation and inflammation that lead to redness and swelling.

What is azelaic acid?

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring saturated dicarboxylic acid found in barley, wheat, and rye, as well as produced by a type of fungus on human skin. Known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, azelaic acid is effective in treating acne and rosacea. It promotes faster skin healing, clears bacteria from pores, and reduces the visibility of inflammation. Safe for all skin types, azelaic acid is suitable for treating a variety of skin conditions, including dull or impure skin.

How long does it take for Finacea to work?

Finacea Gel can start to show visible improvements in rosacea or acne within the first month of use, though full effects may take a few months. Consistency is key, as the gel needs to be applied twice daily without interruption to maintain its effectiveness. If you don’t see improvement after four weeks, or if your condition worsens, you should consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Does Finacea work for everyone?

While Finacea has a high success rate in treating rosacea and acne, it may not be effective for everyone. Some users may not see any improvement and might require a stronger medication. In such cases, alternative treatments can be explored, and it's advisable to consult a healthcare provider for further options.

What are some alternative treatments to Finacea?

There are several alternatives to Finacea for treating rosacea and acne. For rosacea, options include oral antibiotics like Efracea and Erythromycin, as well as topical creams like Dermalex. Other prescription-only topical alternatives include:
  • Rozex Gel: Contains metronidazole, an antibiotic.
  • Soolantra: Contains ivermectin, known for its anti-inflammatory and antiparasitic properties.
  • Mirvaso Gel: Contains brimonidine tartrate, which reduces redness by decreasing blood flow to the treated area.
For acne, alternatives include Acnecide Gel (benzoyl peroxide), Differin Cream or Gel (adapalene), Epiduo Gel
