What are Canesten pessaries?

Canesten pessaries are vaginal tablets used to treat yeast infections such as vaginal thrush. They contain the antifungal agent clotrimazole, which works by attacking the yeast cells causing the infection, thereby stopping their growth and killing them. The pessaries are inserted directly into the vagina with an applicator, providing targeted treatment at the site of infection. This treatment is effective in alleviating symptoms like itching, burning, and abnormal discharge. Canesten pessaries are often chosen for their effectiveness in directly addressing the internal aspects of vaginal yeast infections while minimizing systemic effects.

What is the active ingredient in Canesten pessaries?

Canesten pessaries are available in 3 strengths they either contain: 100mg, 200mg, 500g of the active ingredient Clomatrizole.

What are Canesten pessaries used for?

Canesten pessaries are specifically formulated to treat vaginal thrush. They contain clotrimazole, an antifungal agent that belongs to the azole class of medications. By disrupting the cell membrane of yeast cells, clotrimazole inhibits their growth and causes them to die, effectively treating the infection. These pessaries are inserted directly into the vagina, targeting the infection at its source to ensure effective relief. These pessaries should only be used if you have been previously diagnosed with vaginal thrush by a healthcare professional to ensure they are appropriate for your condition. Recognized for its efficacy, clotrimazole provides relief from the uncomfortable symptoms associated with vaginal thrush and helps prevent recurrence when used as directed. Vaginal thrush, also known as candidiasis, is a common yeast infection primarily caused by the Candida species, most often Candida albicans. It affects the vagina and surrounding tissues, leading to symptoms such as itching, irritation, and a white discharge that resembles cottage cheese. While it is not considered a sexually transmitted infection, it can significantly impact comfort and daily activities.

How do Canesten pessaries work?

Canesten pessaries work by delivering the antifungal agent clotrimazole directly to the site of a fungal infection in the vagina. Clotrimazole, the active ingredient in Canesten pessaries, belongs to a class of medications known as azole antifungals. It functions by targeting the cell membrane of the yeast fungus, primarily Candida, which is responsible for causing thrush infections. Clotrimazole disrupts the production of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. Without ergosterol, the fungal cells cannot maintain their integrity, leading to holes in the cell membrane. This disruption causes essential cellular components to leak out, ultimately resulting in the death of the fungal cells. By treating the infection directly at its source, Canesten pessaries effectively alleviate symptoms such as itching, irritation, and abnormal discharge, providing relief and helping to clear the infection. The pessary format ensures that the medication is administered locally within the vagina, maximizing its impact on the infection while minimizing systemic absorption and side effects.

How do you use Canesten pessaries?

If Canesten 200mg Pessary has been prescribed to you by your doctor, please adhere to their specific instructions. If you have purchased this product over the counter, follow these detailed directions carefully: To administer, use the provided applicator to insert the pessary as deeply into the vagina as possible, ideally before bedtime. For effective treatment, you can choose to insert one pessary nightly for six consecutive nights or use two pessaries for three consecutive nights. Before and after handling the applicator and pessary, ensure you wash your hands thoroughly. Below are the steps for using the Canesten 200mg Pessary:
  1. Preparation:
    • Open the packaging and extend the plunger on the applicator to its full length, ensuring the red lock is engaged.
    • Carefully remove the pessary from its foil packaging and position it into the applicator, rounded side first.
  2. Insertion:
    • Press the plunger until it clicks into place, securing the pessary.
    • Lie back with your knees bent, and carefully insert the applicator into the vagina until it reaches the grip zone.
    • Press the plunger completely to release the pessary.
  3. Aftercare:
    • Carefully remove the applicator. Disassemble all parts and clean thoroughly with warm soapy water, rinse well, and dry.
    • Store the applicator in a clean, safe place for future use.
Post-Insertion:
  • Dispose of the applicator responsibly after completing your treatment, ensuring it is kept out of reach of children and not flushed down the toilet.
  • A panty liner may be useful, as the pessary can leave a white residue, which is normal and not indicative of treatment failure. However, if you notice undissolved pieces of the pessary, consult with a healthcare professional as it may indicate the treatment was not effective.
Monitoring Symptoms:
  • Symptoms of thrush should improve within three days. If there is no improvement after seven days, consult your doctor.
  • If symptoms reoccur within seven days, a second treatment may be used. However, if you experience more than two infections in six months, seek medical advice.
Missed Dose:
  • If you forget a dose, insert the missed pessary as soon as you remember and continue as directed. Missing more than one dose may affect the treatment’s effectiveness, so consult your doctor if symptoms persist after the course is completed.
Precautions:
  • Canesten 200mg Pessary is intended for vaginal use only. Do not ingest. If swallowed accidentally, contact your nearest hospital or inform your doctor immediately.
Adhering to these instructions will help ensure effective treatment of vaginal thrush with Canesten 200mg Pessary.

Frequently asked questions

What are Canesten pessaries?

Canesten pessaries are a treatment for vaginal thrush, suitable for individuals between 16-60 years old. They consist of a tablet, known as a pessary, which is inserted into the vagina using a plastic applicator included in the pack. The active ingredient, clotrimazole, is an antifungal medication that eliminates the yeast causing thrush by being inserted directly into the vagina.

How should Canesten pessaries be used?

For optimal results, it is recommended to insert the pessary at bedtime, allowing it to dissolve overnight. This provides an extended period for the medication to act while you are lying down. Some may also choose to use an external cream to relieve external itching and soreness.

What is Canesten pessary used for?

Canesten pessaries are used specifically to treat vaginal thrush by destroying the Candida fungi responsible for the infection's symptoms, such as soreness, itching, and discharge. They are inserted using an applicator to target the infection directly at its source.

What is vaginal thrush?

Vaginal thrush is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida fungi. Typical symptoms include itching of the vagina and vulva, redness and swelling, and a white, cottage cheese-like discharge. While not harmful, thrush can be uncomfortable and is treatable with appropriate medication.

How do Canesten pessaries work?

Canesten pessaries contain clotrimazole, which combats thrush by disrupting the production of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Without ergosterol, the fungal cells leak and die, effectively clearing the infection.

How do I know if Canesten pessaries are working?

Relief from thrush symptoms typically begins within a few days of treatment. Complete symptom relief should occur within 3-7 days. If symptoms persist beyond this period or if you experience recurrent infections, consult your doctor.

How long do Canesten pessaries take to dissolve?

Canesten pessaries should ideally be inserted at bedtime, allowing them to dissolve overnight. It's normal to notice some residue or parts of the pessary exiting the vagina the next day.

What if I miss a dose of Canesten pessaries?

If you forget to use a pessary at night, you can insert it the following morning. However, it's best to maintain the nighttime routine for the remainder of the treatment to ensure effectiveness.

What are the ingredients in Canesten pessaries?

Canesten pessaries contain the active ingredient clotrimazole. Inactive ingredients include calcium lactate, lactic acid, lactose, and magnesium stearate, among others. Please refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for a complete list.

What are the possible side effects of Canesten pessaries?

While most side effects are mild and temporary, they can include local irritation, swelling, discomfort, or an increase in vaginal discharge. Severe reactions, although rare, should be reported immediately to a healthcare provider.

Are there any warnings associated with Canesten pessaries?

It is important to consult your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms for the first time, have had multiple infections recently, or if you have other health conditions that might complicate the use of antifungal treatments. Additionally, Canesten pessaries can reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives. For more detailed information or if you have additional questions about using Canesten pessaries, please consult the Patient Information Leaflet or speak with a healthcare provider.
