What is Buscopan?

Buscopan is a brand name for the medication hyoscine butylbromide, which is an antispasmodic agent used primarily to relieve abdominal pain and cramps associated with gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and spasmodic dyspepsia. It works by relaxing the muscles of the stomach and intestines, helping to ease painful contractions and spasms in the digestive tract.

Buscopan can also be used to relieve the symptoms of other spasmodic gastrointestinal conditions, and sometimes it is used in medical procedures to help reduce spasms of the bladder and urinary tract.

What is the active ingredient in Buscopan?

Active ingredients: hyoscine butylbromide 10 mg.

What is Buscopan used for?

Buscopan Tablets contain hyoscine butylbromide, which is part of a category of medications known as antispasmodics. These tablets are designed to alleviate cramping in the muscles of various organs including:

  • Stomach
  • Intestines
  • Bladder and the urinary tract

Additionally, Buscopan Tablets are effective in managing symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

How does Buscopan work?

Buscopan works by containing the active ingredient hyoscine butylbromide, which is an antispasmodic medication. This means it helps to relax the muscles in the walls of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as those in the bladder and urinary tract. Hyoscine butylbromide acts specifically by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that signals muscles to contract.

By inhibiting these muscle contractions, Buscopan reduces the painful spasms and cramps associated with various gastrointestinal and urinary disorders. This action provides relief from the discomfort and pain often experienced in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other spasmodic gastrointestinal disorders. The medication does not enter the brain, which allows it to provide targeted relief without causing significant side effects commonly associated with the central nervous system.

How do you use Buscopan?

If you are unsure about any aspect of your medication, such as the dosage or duration of treatment, it's important to consult with your healthcare provider.
