How does Clotrimazole cream work?

Clotrimazole is a powerful antifungal agent that works by effectively killing the fungus responsible for infections and preventing the spread of the infection. It achieves this by disrupting the fungal cell membrane, creating holes that cause the contents of the cell to leak out, ultimately leading to the death of the fungus. Clotrimazole is known for its rapid action. Most people experience significant relief from symptoms such as itching, redness, and irritation within just a few days of starting treatment. By quickly addressing both the root cause of the infection and the uncomfortable symptoms, Clotrimazole helps restore skin health and prevent the recurrence of the infection.

How do you use Clotrimazole cream?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in the leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you're unsure about any details, consult your healthcare provider. If you purchased this product without a prescription, follow these directions carefully:
  • Before using, pierce the tube seal by turning the cap upside down and pressing it over the end of the tube.
  • If your feet are infected, wash and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, before applying the cream.
  • Apply Clotrimazole cream thinly and evenly to the affected areas two or three times daily, and gently rub it in.
  • A strip of cream about ½ cm long is sufficient to treat an area the size of your hand.
  • The length of treatment depends on the type of infection. For candida (thrush) infections, use the cream for at least two weeks. For other infections, continue treatment for at least one month.
  • If you have athlete’s foot, using an antifungal dusting powder in addition to the cream may be beneficial. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to recommend one.
The symptoms of skin infection, such as itching or soreness, should improve within a few days of treatment, although signs like redness and scaling may take longer to disappear. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor. Important Points:
  • Clotrimazole is for external use only.
  • Do not ingest the cream or put it in your mouth.
  • If the cream is accidentally swallowed, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest Accident and Emergency Department.
  • If the cream accidentally gets into your eyes or mouth, rinse immediately with water and contact your doctor.
If You Forget to Use Clotrimazole: Apply the cream as soon as you remember, then continue with your regular treatment schedule.

If You Stop Using Clotrimazole

Do not stop using Clotrimazole abruptly, as this may cause the infection symptoms to return. To ensure the treatment is effective, follow these simple self-care tips:
  • Avoid scratching the infected area, even though it may itch. Scratching can damage the skin’s surface and cause the infection to spread further.
  • Keep the affected areas clean to help the treatment work effectively.
  • Dry the skin thoroughly, especially in folds, but avoid excessive rubbing that could irritate the skin.
  • Do not share towels, bath mats, or other personal items with others, as this could spread the infection.
  • Always wash your hands after applying the cream to prevent the infection from spreading to other areas or people.
For Athlete’s Foot:
  • Ensure you dry the skin between your toes thoroughly after washing.
  • Wash your socks, stockings, and tights thoroughly in hot water to remove any fungal spores or shed skin.
  • If possible, change your footwear daily to keep the environment around your feet clean and dry.
If you have any further questions about using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not use Clotrimazole cream?

Do Not Use Clotrimazole:

  • If you (or your baby, if treating nappy rash) are allergic to clotrimazole or any of the other ingredients in this medicine, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Clotrimazole if you have previously used a cream containing clotrimazole or a similar medicine and experienced an allergic or unpleasant skin reaction, such as a rash or itching in the area where the cream was applied.
  • Do not smoke or go near open flames while using this product, as fabrics (such as clothing, bedding, dressings, etc.) that have come into contact with the cream may burn more easily and pose a serious fire hazard. Washing these items may reduce product build-up but may not completely remove it.

Important Information for Contraceptive Use:

  • Like other creams, Clotrimazole may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, such as condoms or diaphragms. If you are using this cream on the vulva or penis, it is recommended to use alternative precautions for at least five days after finishing the treatment.

What are the side effects of Clotrimazole cream?

Like all medicines, Clotrimazole Cream can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Some individuals, including babies, may be allergic to the cream. If you or your baby are allergic, a reaction may occur shortly after beginning treatment. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, stop using Clotrimazole immediately and contact your doctor or visit the Accident and Emergency Department at your nearest hospital. Signs of an allergic reaction may include:
  • Rash
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Swelling of the lips, face, throat, or tongue
  • Weakness, dizziness, or feeling faint
  • Nausea
After applying the cream, you might experience:
  • Itching, rash, blisters, burning, discomfort, swelling, irritation, tingling (pins and needles), redness, or peeling of the skin. These symptoms may indicate an allergy to the cream.

Reporting Side Effects

If you or your baby experience any side effects, speak with your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse. This includes any side effects not listed in the leaflet. You can also report side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme at: yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk or by searching for MHRA Yellow Card in the Google Play or Apple App Store. Reporting side effects helps provide more information on the safety of this medicine.

Does Clotrimazole cream interact with other medicines?

Clotrimazole is primarily used as a topical cream, and it is generally not known to interact with other medications because it is applied to the skin and has minimal systemic absorption. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:
  1. Rubber Contraceptives: Clotrimazole cream may reduce the effectiveness of rubber-based contraceptives, such as condoms and diaphragms. If you are using the cream on the vulva or penis, it is recommended to use alternative contraceptive methods or take additional precautions for at least five days after using the product.
  2. Oral or Systemic Medications: While Clotrimazole cream is not known to interact with oral or systemic medications, it is always a good idea to inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal remedies. This will help ensure that there are no potential interactions.
Overall, Clotrimazole cream is considered safe and unlikely to interact with other medicines, but it's always best to consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.
