What are Cyclizine tablets?

Cyclizine tablets are a trusted antihistamine used to relieve nausea and stop vomiting. Each tablet contains 50mg of Cyclizine Hydrochloride, making them effective for easing various types of sickness. They help manage symptoms of morning sickness, vertigo, motion sickness, and inner ear issues such as Ménière’s disease. Available over the counter, Cyclizine tablets offer a convenient way to feel better when you’re experiencing nausea or vomiting.

What is the active ingredient in Cyclizine?

Cyclizine 50mg tablets contain Cyclizine Hydrochloride as the active ingredient, which helps relieve nausea and vomiting.

What is Cyclizine used for?

Cyclizine is used to help relieve nausea and prevent vomiting. It’s commonly taken to treat motion sickness, morning sickness, and issues related to vertigo or inner ear problems like Ménière's disease.

How does Cyclizine work?

Cyclizine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the brain, which helps stop the signals that trigger nausea and vomiting. By reducing these signals, it effectively eases symptoms related to motion sickness, morning sickness, and other conditions that cause nausea.

How to take Cyclizine tablets

Take one Cyclizine tablet up to three times a day, as needed, to relieve nausea or vomiting. The tablet typically starts working within 30 minutes, with full effects noticeable within 1 to 2 hours. You can take Cyclizine with or without food.

Please Note:

  • This medicine may cause drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel sleepy.
  • Avoid alcohol, as it can increase the risk of side effects.

Who should not take Cyclizine

Cyclizine is usually well tolerated by most adults and children, but it might not be suitable if you:

  • Have had an allergic reaction to Cyclizine before
  • Suffer from glaucoma
  • Experience difficulty urinating
  • Have conditions such as Crohn's disease, hernias, or colon cancer
  • Have liver problems
  • Suffer from epilepsy or any condition that causes seizures
  • Have blood disorders like sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia, or multiple myeloma
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Experience heart failure
  • Have a tumour known as phaeochromocytoma
  • Suffer from porphyria, a serious blood disorder

Important Note: If you are scheduled for an allergy test, please be aware that Cyclizine can affect the results. Stop taking the medication a few days before your test and inform the clinic that you have been using Cyclizine.

Cyclizine side effects

Cyclizine tablets are generally well tolerated by most children and adults, but as with any medication, they can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Constipation

Staying well hydrated and eating a high-fiber diet may help ease these symptoms. However, if you experience any of the following, contact 111 or your GP immediately:

  • Extreme drowsiness
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Bleeding that won't stop
  • Signs of liver damage, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes

If you suspect an overdose of Cyclizine, watch for these symptoms and stop taking the tablets. Should you or someone else take too many and experience any of the following, call 999 or head to A&E immediately:

  • Uncontrolled movements
  • Fits or seizures
  • Hallucinations

Driving while taking Cyclizine

You may drive while using Cyclizine if you know how it affects you. However, if the tablets cause dizziness, drowsiness, or sleepiness, avoid driving or operating any machinery.

Cyclizine interactions

Cyclizine is generally safe, but a few substances may affect how it works. Here are the main interactions to be aware of:

  • Clozapine: Combining Cyclizine with clozapine might alter the effects of either medication.
  • Monoamine-Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): Drugs like Tranylcypromine can interact with Cyclizine.
  • Medications with Similar Side Effects: If you're taking other drugs that cause dry mouth, difficulty urinating, or headaches, Cyclizine might worsen these side effects.
  • Strong Painkillers: Medicines such as morphine could interact with Cyclizine.
  • Alcohol: Since Cyclizine reduces vomiting, mixing it with alcohol may increase the risk of alcohol poisoning. It can also affect your breathing and your ability to wake up.
  • Other Antihistamines: As Cyclizine is an antihistamine, avoid taking additional antihistamines like Cetirizine or Loratadine to prevent overlapping effects.
  • Herbal and Alternative Remedies: Some herbal or alternative treatments might interact with Cyclizine. Be sure to mention any such remedies to your GP or include them on our consultation form so we can ensure they are safe to use together.

For a full list of interactions, see: Cyclizine interactions.
