What is Daktarin Oral gel?

Daktarin Oral Gel is an antifungal medication used to treat and prevent fungal infections in the mouth and throat, such as oral thrush. Its active ingredient, miconazole, works by destroying the fungi and yeast that cause the infection, thereby alleviating symptoms such as pain, redness, and difficulty swallowing. The gel form of the medication allows it to coat the mouth and throat effectively, ensuring that it directly targets the affected areas.

Daktarin Oral Gel is suitable for use in both adults and children over the age of four months, making it a commonly recommended treatment for oral fungal infections. It’s important to follow the dosage instructions provided by a healthcare professional to ensure effective treatment and prevent the recurrence of infection.

What is the active ingredient in Daktarin Oral gel?

Daktarin Sugar-Free 2% Oral Gel contains the active ingredient: Miconazole 20 mg.

What is Daktarin Oral gel used for?

Daktarin Sugar Free 2% Oral Gel is a medication designed to treat superficial fungal infections in the mouth and throat. It contains the active ingredient miconazole, which effectively kills the fungus causing the infection. This gel is suitable for adults, children, and infants aged 4 months and older.

How does Daktarin Oral gel work?

Daktarin Oral Gel works by using its active ingredient, miconazole, to combat fungal infections. Miconazole is an antifungal agent that disrupts the structure and function of fungal cell membranes. It interferes with the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, which results in increased permeability and leakage of cellular components, ultimately leading to the death of the fungal cells.

When applied to the mouth or throat, Daktarin Oral Gel targets the affected areas directly, ensuring that the medication is delivered precisely where it's needed to effectively treat the infection. This direct application helps relieve symptoms quickly by reducing the fungal load in the mouth and throat, thereby alleviating discomfort and promoting healing.

How do you use Daktarin Oral gel?

Please refer to the guidelines below to ensure proper usage of the medicine:

  • Each tube of the gel is sealed. Use the cap to break the seal.
  • This medication is for oral use only.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dosage listed in the table.
  • It is best to use the gel after meals.

Application Instructions:

  • Apply the gel directly to the affected area using a clean finger. Allow the gel to remain in contact with the affected area for as long as possible without swallowing immediately.
  • If you wear dentures, remove them at bedtime and apply the gel to prevent infection.
  • When administering the gel to a child or infant, ensure safety by dividing each dose into smaller portions to prevent choking. Place the gel toward the front of the mouth, not at the back of the throat.
  • Consult your doctor before using this medication for infants between 4-6 months old who are premature, have developmental delays, or have difficulty swallowing.

Dosage Instructions:

  • Infants under 4 months old: Do not use.
  • Infants and children 4 months to 2 years old: Apply 1.25 ml of gel (¼ measuring spoon) to the affected area four times a day after meals. Continue treatment for up to 7 days after symptoms clear.
  • Adults and children aged 2 years and over: Apply 2.5 ml of gel (½ measuring spoon) to the affected area four times a day after meals. Continue treatment for up to 7 days after symptoms clear.

If Overdose Occurs:

  • If an overdose occurs or the gel is accidentally swallowed in large amounts, contact a doctor or the nearest Accident and Emergency Department immediately with this leaflet.

If a Dose is Missed:

  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. Do not double the next dose.

Follow these instructions carefully and consult your doctor if symptoms persist or if you have concerns about the use of this medication.
