What is Fucibet cream?

Fucibet cream is a treatment for infected eczema, beneficial for skin health when both inflammation and infection are present. It contains two active ingredients: fusidic acid and betamethasone. Fusidic acid combats infection, while betamethasone reduces inflammation. This dual-action cream is applied topically and can also be used for other inflammatory skin conditions where infection is present.

Manufactured by Leo Laboratories Limited, Fucibet cream is a prescription-only medicine (POM). It is available from Medicalmojo.co.uk for adults over 18 years old in 30-gram or 60-gram tubes.

What are the active ingredients in Fucibet cream?

Fucibet cream contains two active ingredients, fusidic acid and betamethasone. Fusidic acid combats infection, while betamethasone reduces inflammation.

What is Fucibet cream used for?

Fucibet cream is primarily used to treat infected eczema, a condition characterized by both inflammation and infection of the skin. The cream contains two active ingredients: fusidic acid, an antibiotic that fights bacterial infections, and betamethasone, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and itching. Due to its dual action, Fucibet cream is effective not only for infected eczema but also for other inflammatory skin conditions where an infection is present. It helps to improve skin health by addressing both the infection and the associated inflammation.

Key Uses:

  • Infected eczema
  • Inflammatory skin conditions with an infection
Note: Fucibet cream should be used for up to 2 weeks. If no improvement is seen after 7 days, discontinue use and consult a doctor to avoid the risk of bacterial resistance.

How does Fucibet cream work?

Fucibet cream contains two active ingredients that work together to treat inflamed and infected skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis.
  1. Fusidic Acid:

    • Antibiotic Action: Fusidic acid is an antibiotic that treats bacterial infections by inhibiting the production of essential proteins within the bacteria. These proteins are crucial for bacterial multiplication. Without them, the bacteria cannot spread, and the infection is contained.
    • Mechanism: While fusidic acid does not directly kill the bacteria, it prevents their growth. Basically the fusidic acid prevents the rapid reproduction of the bacteria, which buys the immune system time to prepare to eliminate the bacteria. Fusidic acid is particularly effective in creams for treating infected eczema or dermatitis.
  2. Betamethasone:
    • Anti-inflammatory Action: Betamethasone is a topical corticosteroid that reduces inflammation associated with eczema or dermatitis. The body's immune system can release chemicals that irritate the skin, causing blood vessels to widen and leading to redness, pain, itching, or swelling.
    • Mechanism: Betamethasone penetrates the skin cells and reduces the release of these inflammatory substances, thereby decreasing redness, swelling, and itching.

Combined Effect:

  • Infection Control: Fusidic acid addresses the bacterial infection.
  • Symptom Relief: Betamethasone reduces inflammation and discomfort.
Fucibet cream is primarily used to treat skin inflammation where bacterial infection is present. The combination of fusidic acid and betamethasone ensures that both the infection and inflammation are effectively managed. Consulting with a GP or pharmacist can help determine if Fucibet cream is the right treatment for your condition.

How do you use Fucibet cream?

For adults over the age of 18: Apply Fucibet to the affected areas twice daily. For children or individuals under 18, it is recommended to consult a doctor. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying this medicine, and wash them again after application unless treating your hands. Allow Fucibet cream to soak in for 30 minutes before applying other moisturizers or creams to ensure full absorption. Discard the tube and its contents 3 months after opening. Do not dispose of medicines in household trash. Instead, take them to a pharmacy for responsible disposal, free of charge.

Who should not use Fucibet Cream?

Carefully reviewing the following warnings will help ensure you select the appropriate product. Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to any of the cream’s ingredients. Exercise caution when applying Fucibet over large areas or on the face, especially near the eyes. Fucibet cream should not be used for the following conditions or diseases:
  • Acne
  • Perioral dermatitis (rash around the mouth)
  • Viral infections (e.g., cold sores, herpes, chickenpox)
  • Bacterial infections unrelated to dermatitis
  • Fungal infections (e.g., thrush, athlete’s foot)
  • Rosacea (flushing of the skin around the nose)
  • Conditions related to syphilis or tuberculosis
Avoid applying Fucibet cream to areas affected by conditions other than eczema or dermatitis, such as impetigo, thrush, nappy rash, rosacea, or viral infections like herpes (cold sores/genital herpes). Always read the packaging and the Patient Information Leaflet before using any new medicine, and inform your doctor of any other medicines you are taking or plan to take.

What are the side effects of Fucibet cream?

Not everyone using Fucibet cream will experience side effects, but if they do occur, they may include:
  • Rash, itching, or inflammation at the application site
  • Excessive hair growth, known as ‘hypertrichosis’
  • Inflammation of hair follicles, referred to as ‘folliculitis’
If you are concerned about these side effects or notice any other adverse effects, discontinue use and consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Does Fucibet cream interact with any other medicines?

Fucibet cream is applied topically and typically has minimal risk of interacting with other medications. However, it's important to be aware of the following:
  • Other Topical Treatments: Avoid applying other topical medications or creams to the same area where Fucibet is used unless advised by a healthcare professional. Combining different topical treatments may affect their efficacy or cause irritation.
  • Systemic Steroids: While unlikely, systemic corticosteroids or other systemic medications may have interactions with Fucibet if used concurrently. Ensure your healthcare provider is aware of all medications you are taking.
  • Skin Care Products: Use caution with skin care products containing strong acids or alcohol, as these may increase irritation when used with Fucibet.
Always read the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before using Fucibet cream to ensure you understand how to use it correctly and to be aware of any potential interactions or precautions. If you have any concerns or are taking other medications, consult your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
