What is Otomize ear spray?

Otomize Ear Spray is specifically designed to treat mild to moderate outer ear infections, called otitis externa. If you are a swimmer you may have experienced plenty of these outer ear infections and so another name that is used that is not quite so scientific is “Swimmer’s Ear”.

Otomize Ear spray has been formulated to tackle both the infection and the accompanying inflammtion, this means it addresses the root cause of the problem, those pesky bacteria, while also working to reduce any pain caused by the inflammation.

What are the active ingredients in Otomize ear spray?

Otomize ear spray contains dexamethasone, neomycin sulphate, acetic acid.

What is Otomize ear spray used for?

Otomize ear spray is used to treat outer ear infections called otitis externa.

How does Otomize ear spray work?

Otomize Ear Spray contains three active ingredients that work together to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and target the source of the infection. These ingredients include:
  • Neomycin – an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group, effective against a wide range of bacteria.
  • Glacial acetic acid – helps create an acidic environment in the ear, inhibiting bacterial growth.
  • Dexamethasone – a powerful anti-inflammatory that reduces swelling and alleviates pain.
Antibacterial Protection Otitis externa infections, are caused by bacteria which can start to reproduce and overpower local immune defences if the conditions are right. Remember another name for otitis externa is Swimmer's ear, so that should give you a clue to what essential ingredient allows bacteria to thrive. Yes, it's the water that is trapped in the ear after swimming or bathing creates a warm, moist environment ideal for bacterial growth. Otomize Ear Spray contains Neomycin, which works quickly to eliminate the bacteria and stop the infection from progressing. Anti-inflammatory Relief Your body’s immune response to bacteria can lead to inflammation, causing pain, redness, and swelling. Otomize Ear Spray includes Dexamethasone, a potent anti-inflammatory agent that soothes irritation and reduces inflammation, allowing the antibiotic to do its job more effectively.

How do you use Otomize ear spray?

Adults (including the elderly) and children aged 2 years and over:
  • Discontinue use if there is no improvement after 7 days.
  • Administer one metered dose directly into each affected ear three times a day.
  • Continue treatment for two days after symptoms have completely disappeared.
Infants and neonates (under 2 years of age):
  • Otomize ear spray is not suitable for infants and neonates.
Method of administration:
  • Shake the bottle well before each use. Before first use, press the actuator several times to release a fine spray. Each press delivers a single metered dose. Avoid inhaling the spray.
  • Administer by gently placing the nozzle tip into the ear opening and pressing the actuator once.
  • Use the spray within one month of first use. If the spray has not been used for over a week, press the actuator a few times before using it again.

Who should not use Otomize ear spray?

Hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or any excipients listed in the patient information leaflet. This product should not be used in patients with a diagnosed or suspected perforated tympanic membrane, or in those with a tympanostomy tube (grommet) in place. The product is not suitable for use in infants and neonates under 2 years of age. Do not use this medication if you have grommets fitted or a perforated eardrum. Consult a doctor before use if you have a mitochondrial disease, or if there is an open wound or damaged skin in the affected ear. Overuse of this product may lead to hearing loss or deafness. This treatment should not be used more than three times a year. If you experience frequent ear infections, consult your doctor, as there may be an underlying cause, such as chronic otitis media. Discontinue use and seek medical advice if irritation or rash occurs, or if the condition worsens or does not improve within 7 days. When treating otitis externa with aminoglycoside-containing products, there is an increased risk of drug-induced deafness in patients with a perforated tympanic membrane. Therefore, it is important to confirm there is no perforation of the ear drum before using otomize ear spray. Corticosteroid/antibiotic combinations should not be used for more than 7 days if there is no clinical improvement, as prolonged use can lead to the hidden spread of infections due to the masking effect of steroids. In children, there is a theoretical risk of adrenal suppression from absorbed steroids, particularly with prolonged use, which increases this risk. Prolonged use may also result in skin sensitization and the emergence of resistant organisms. Due to potentially immature renal function in children, toxicity may occur, so caution is advised when administering neomycin to this age group. Aminoglycoside antibiotics can cause irreversible, partial, or total deafness when used systemically or topically on open wounds or damaged skin. This effect is dose-related and worsened by renal or hepatic impairment. Consider this risk when using high doses or prolonged treatment in young children. There have been cases of increased ototoxicity risk with aminoglycosides in patients with mitochondrial mutations, especially the m.1555A>G mutation, even when aminoglycoside serum levels were within the recommended range. Some cases were linked to a maternal history of deafness and/or mitochondrial mutation. While no cases were specifically linked to neomycin, similar effects may be possible due to a shared mechanism of action. These mitochondrial mutations are rare, and the extent of this effect is unknown. Visual disturbance Visual disturbances, such as blurred vision, may occur with systemic and topical corticosteroid use. Patients presenting with these symptoms should be referred to an ophthalmologist for evaluation, as possible causes include cataracts, glaucoma, or rare conditions like central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR), which have been reported following corticosteroid use. Contains methyl and propyl hydroxybenzoates (E218 and E216), which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed), and stearyl alcohol, which may cause local skin reactions, such as contact dermatitis.

What are the side effects with Otomize ear spray?

As with all medications, Otomize may cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most commonly reported side effects include:
  • Pins and needles
  • Skin irritation or rashes
  • Blurred vision
If you experience any of these side effects, or others not listed, including allergic reactions, discontinue use and seek medical advice. When you first apply Otomize ear spray you might experience mild burning or stinging, however on subsequent dosing as your body becomes accustomed to it, this feeling will subside. Please make sure to read the Patient Information Leaflet before using this product.

Does Otomize ear spray interact with any medicines?

There are no known drug interactions with Otomize ear spray.

What is otitis externa?

Otitis externa is an infection or inflammation of the outer ear canal, typically caused by bacteria or fungi. It is often referred to as "swimmer's ear" because it frequently occurs after water exposure.

What causes otitis externa?

Otitis externa is most commonly caused by bacteria, but fungi can also be responsible. Factors such as swimming, excessive moisture, trauma to the ear canal, and using earplugs or hearing aids can increase the risk.

What are the symptoms of otitis externa?

Common symptoms include ear pain, itching, redness, swelling, discharge, and temporary hearing loss. In more severe cases, the pain can radiate to the neck or face.

How is otitis externa treated?

Treatment typically involves topical medications, such as antibiotic or antifungal ear drops or sprays. In some cases, oral antibiotics may be prescribed if the infection is more severe.

Can otitis externa go away on its own?

Mild cases of otitis externa may resolve on their own, but it is advisable to seek medical treatment to prevent the infection from worsening and to alleviate discomfort.

How long does otitis externa last?

With appropriate treatment, most cases of otitis externa improve within 7 to 10 days. However, without treatment, the condition may persist or worsen.

How can I prevent otitis externa?

To prevent otitis externa, keep your ears dry, avoid inserting objects into the ear canal (including cotton swabs), and use earplugs while swimming. Tilt your head to drain water after swimming or bathing.

Is otitis externa contagious?

Otitis externa is not contagious, as it is typically caused by bacteria or fungi that naturally live in the ear canal but overgrow under certain conditions.

Can otitis externa cause permanent hearing loss?

In most cases, otitis externa causes temporary hearing loss due to swelling and blockage of the ear canal. Permanent hearing loss is rare and usually only occurs in severe or untreated cases.

Who is most at risk for developing otitis externa?

People who swim frequently, those with eczema or psoriasis, and individuals who regularly use hearing aids or earplugs are at higher risk of developing otitis externa. It is also more common in humid or hot climates.
