What is Solpadeine Max?

Solpadeine Max tablets and soluble tablets contain codeine and paracetamol, both effective painkillers used to treat acute moderate pain in individuals over 12 years old. This type of pain is short-term and can interfere with daily activities, such as severe headaches or toothaches. Additionally, Solpadeine Max contains 30mg of caffeine, which may enhance the effectiveness of paracetamol and help counteract the drowsiness caused by codeine.

Codeine, an opioid analgesic, can lead to addiction, so Solpadeine Max should only be used for a maximum of three days. If your pain persists beyond three days despite taking paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Solpadeine Max tablets and soluble tablets are available for purchase online at The Independent Pharmacy after completing a short online consultation with our pharmacists. They come in boxes of 24 tablets or 30 soluble tablets and are manufactured by Omega Pharma.

What are the active ingredients in Solpadeine Max soluble tablets?

Each soluble tablet contains:
  • Paracetamol 500 mg, Codeine Phosphate Hemihydrate 12.8 mg and Caffeine 30 mg.

What are Solpadeine Max soluble tablets used for?

Solpadeine Max is effective in treating acute moderate pain caused by:
  • Migraines or headaches
  • Dental pain
  • Period pain
  • Strains and sprains
  • Backache
  • Arthritis, rheumatic pain, and sciatica
Solpadeine Max for Headaches: Solpadeine Max is effective for treating moderate headaches that interfere with daily activities but should not be used for more than three days. It is intended for headaches when simple analgesics such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin alone have not been effective. However, it is important to note that headaches are a common side effect of Solpadeine Max. Overusing painkillers for headaches can worsen symptoms. Since headaches can have various causes, if you need painkillers for headache relief for more than 10 days, you should seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

How do Solpadeine Max soluble tablets work?

Solpadeine Max soluble tablets combine three active ingredients: codeine, paracetamol, and caffeine, each playing a specific role in pain relief:
  1. Paracetamol: This is an analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). It works by blocking the production of certain chemicals in the brain that cause pain and inflammation, helping to reduce the sensation of pain.
  2. Codeine: This is an opioid analgesic that works by binding to specific receptors in the brain and spinal cord, altering the way the body perceives and responds to pain. Codeine is effective for more severe pain that paracetamol alone cannot relieve.
  3. Caffeine: This enhances the effectiveness of paracetamol and helps counteract the drowsiness that some people may experience from codeine. Caffeine also acts as a mild stimulant.
When you dissolve a Solpadeine Max tablet in water, it quickly breaks down, allowing the active ingredients to be absorbed rapidly into the bloodstream. This leads to faster pain relief compared to traditional tablets. Solpadeine Max soluble tablets are particularly useful for individuals who have difficulty swallowing pills or prefer a faster-acting form of pain relief. However, it’s important to follow the dosage instructions and not use Solpadeine Max for more than three consecutive days to avoid the risk of addiction and other side effects.

  • Know that you metabolize codeine into morphine very rapidly (ultra-rapid metabolizers).
Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Solpadeine Max if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking other medications to ensure it is safe for you to use.

Important Information About Codeine Metabolism

Codeine is converted to morphine in the liver by an enzyme. Morphine is the substance that provides pain relief. However, variations in this enzyme can affect individuals differently. In some people, morphine is not produced or is produced in very small quantities, resulting in insufficient pain relief. Conversely, others may produce a very high amount of morphine, leading to serious side effects. If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical advice: slow or shallow breathing, confusion, sleepiness, small pupils, nausea or vomiting, constipation, or lack of appetite.

Use in Children and Adolescents

After Surgery: Codeine should not be used for pain relief in children and adolescents after the removal of tonsils or adenoids due to Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome. Children with Breathing Problems: Codeine is not recommended for children with breathing problems, as the symptoms of morphine toxicity may be more severe in these children.
