What is Zidoval Vaginal Gel?

Zidoval Vaginal Gel is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV). It contains the antibiotic metronidazole, which targets the bacteria causing BV and helps restore a healthy balance of microorganisms in the vagina. The gel is applied directly inside the vagina, usually once daily for five days. It is a localized treatment, which can be a good option for those who prefer not to take oral medication. As with any medication, it’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and complete the full course of treatment to ensure the infection is fully resolved.

What is the active ingredient in Zidoval Vaginal Gel?

Every gram of Zidoval gel contains 7.5mg of the active substance metronidazole.

What is Zidoval Vaginal Gel used for?

Zidoval Vaginal Gel is used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV), a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria found in the vagina. The gel contains metronidazole, an antibiotic that helps to eliminate the bacteria responsible for the infection. By applying the gel directly inside the vagina, Zidoval works to restore a healthy balance of bacteria, alleviating symptoms such as abnormal discharge and a fishy odor. It is typically prescribed for use once daily for five days, and it is a targeted treatment designed to address the infection locally.

How does Zidoval Vaginal Gel work?

Zidoval Vaginal Gel contains metronidazole, an antibiotic that targets bacterial infections. When applied directly into the vagina, metronidazole works to address bacterial vaginosis (BV) by disrupting the DNA of the bacteria causing the infection. This action inhibits their ability to replicate and spread, effectively reducing the bacterial overgrowth and restoring the natural balance of microorganisms in the vaginal environment. By treating the infection locally, Zidoval Vaginal Gel helps to alleviate symptoms such as abnormal discharge and unpleasant odor.

How do you use Zidoval Vaginal Gel?

How to Use Zidoval Vaginal Gel Use Zidoval Vaginal Gel exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any uncertainties, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Zidoval gel is intended for vaginal use only. Important: Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dose for you, which will be indicated on the label provided by your pharmacist. If you’re unsure or if the label does not specify, ask your doctor or pharmacist for clarification. Before Applying Zidoval Gel: Maintain good hygiene when using Zidoval gel:
  • Wash your hands before opening the tube or handling the applicators.
  • Use a new applicator for each dose.
  • Dispose of each used applicator immediately in the waste bin.
Adult Dose: The recommended dose is one 5 g application of Zidoval gel inserted into the vagina once daily at bedtime for five consecutive days. Use in Children and Adolescents: This medicine is not recommended for children under 18 years of age. Use in the Elderly: Zidoval gel is not recommended for use in the elderly. Instructions for Use:
  1. Prepare the Applicator:
    • Remove the cap from the tube and use the pointed end of the cap to pierce the tube’s seal.
    • Attach an applicator to the open end of the tube. Squeeze the tube gently from the bottom to fill the applicator with the required 5 g dose. The plunger will move as the applicator fills and stop when it reaches the correct amount. Detach the applicator and replace the cap on the tube.
  2. Insert the Applicator:
    • Hold the filled applicator by its barrel and gently insert it into the vagina as far as it comfortably goes. This is often easiest when lying on your back with your knees bent.
  3. Release the Gel:
    • Slowly press the plunger to release the gel into the vagina. Continue until the plunger stops, ensuring the full dose is administered. Remove the applicator and discard it in the waste bin.
  4. Repeat:
    • Use a fresh applicator each night at bedtime for five consecutive days, or as directed by your doctor. If symptoms persist after completing the 5-day course, consult your doctor.
If You Use Too Much Zidoval Gel: Avoid using more than the prescribed amount. If you accidentally use too much, seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist, as excessive use may increase the risk of side effects. If You Miss a Dose: Do not double up on doses. Apply Zidoval gel at your next scheduled bedtime. If You Stop Treatment Early: Do not discontinue Zidoval gel before completing the full 5-day course without consulting your doctor. Completing the full treatment is crucial for fully resolving the infection. For further questions about using Zidoval gel, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

2. What is bacterial vaginosis (BV)?

Bacterial vaginosis, often referred to as BV or gardnerella, is a common bacterial infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. It can result from various factors, such as sexual activity or frequent douching, though it's not classified as an STI. Symptoms include abnormal vaginal discharge, itching, and an unusual odor. BV can be treated effectively with medication, but it may recur, so completing the full course of treatment is important.

3. How does Zidoval BV gel work?

Zidoval contains metronidazole, an antibiotic that targets and kills anaerobic bacteria, which are responsible for BV. Metronidazole disrupts bacterial DNA, preventing the bacteria from multiplying. The gel is used for five consecutive days to treat the infection.

4. Can I drink alcohol while using Zidoval gel?

It is best to avoid alcohol while using Zidoval gel and for 24 hours after completing the treatment. Drinking alcohol can cause side effects such as dizziness, nausea, and headaches, although these effects are less common with the gel compared to oral metronidazole tablets.

5. Can I use Zidoval gel while menstruating?

Yes, you can use Zidoval gel during your period. However, avoid using tampons and opt for unscented sanitary pads instead. Complete the treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if you are menstruating.

6. What are the alternatives to Zidoval gel for treating BV?

Alternative treatments for bacterial vaginosis include:
  • Metronidazole tablets: An oral antibiotic.

7. What’s the difference between Zidoval gel, Metrogel, and Rozex?

Zidoval, Metrogel, and Rozex all contain metronidazole, but they are used for different purposes. Zidoval is specifically for treating BV, while Metrogel and Rozex are used for treating rosacea and are applied to the skin. They should not be used interchangeably.

8. How do I use Zidoval gel?

Zidoval gel should be applied as prescribed by your doctor. Generally, you use a 5g dose once daily at bedtime for five days. 11. Are there any warnings or interactions with Zidoval gel?

Zidoval gel should not be used if you are allergic to metronidazole, nitroimidazole antibacterials, or parabens. 16. Is Zidoval Gel safe to use while breastfeeding?

If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Zidoval Gel. Although metronidazole is generally considered safe for short-term use during breastfeeding, it is crucial to seek professional guidance to ensure there are no risks to your infant.
