It’s that time of year again, a time for family to get together, give each other presents, and eat…a lot. If you are taking Mounjaro and are focused on losing weight, then Christmas can be particularly challenging with all the delicious seasonal foods, mince pies are my Achilles heel.

Are you worried about Christmas dinner with Mounjaro? Are you worried about undoing all the hard work and progress that you have made on Mounjaro by overindulging during the festive season? Are you contemplating stopping Mounjaro to enjoy Christmas? In this blog, we will answer all these questions and more.

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro contains the active ingredient, tripeptide, which was originally designed to help manage diabetes but was found to be a very effective weight loss drug. In the SURMOUNT 1 trial, it was found to cause a 22.5% weight loss in individuals on Mounjaro 15mg after 72 weeks.

This led the MHRA to license Mounjaro for weight loss in 2023.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro mimics two gut hormones called GLP-1 and GIP. Initial studies showed that combining GLP-1 and GIP led to significantly greater weight loss. The way Mounjaro achieves weight loss is by:

Can I stop Mounjaro just for Christmas?

It might seem tempting to put your Mounjaro dosing on hold during the Christmas period to allow you to enjoy the festive season. However, we would not recommend that you take a break from your Mounjaro regimen.

One of the main reasons you should continue with Mounjaro is to do with the Mounjaro dosing regimen.

Mounjaro dosing

If you were to take a break from your Mounjaro, when you return to taking it, you would not be able to continue on your previous dose. Whenever you start Mounjaro, whether that is after a break or for the first time, you have to start from Mounjaro 2.5mg and go through the Mounjaro dose escalation steps.

This is to reduce the severity of Mounjaro’s side effects. By slowly titrating your dose, you allow your body to get used to it and so reduce the risks of side effects overwhelming you.

Once you have gone through this Mounjaro dose escalation, your body should be used to it and you shouldn’t experience the uncomfortable side effects. Most side effects during the SURMOUNT 1 trial occurred during this dose escalation period.

What will happen if I stop taking Mounjaro during Christmas?

Although we don’t recommend taking a Mounjaro holiday, at the end of the day the choice is yours. However, another thing to bear in mind is that your appetite will return which could lead to weight gain, especially with all the festive treats on offer.

Since the Mounjaro puts brakes on your appetite, when you stop these are removed. This means your appetite will return with a vengeance, causing you to devour more than usual, potentially undoing all the hard work you have achieved so far.

Can I still enjoy a full Christmas Dinner with Mounjaro?

The good news is that no food is off-limits, while on Mounjaro and that includes your traditional Christmas dinner! However, what will be different with your Mounjaro Christmas is that since your appetite is reduced you will probably not be overindulging like the rest of your family. This is because of Mounjaro’s ability to curb your appetite.

Remember how we said no foods were off-limits? Well, let’s qualify that statement slightly. No foods are off-limits when taken in moderation.

Some foods, like foods high in fat, can potentially make any Mounjaro side effects, like nausea and diarrhoea worse. So, it’s best to try to avoid those high-fat side dishes that accompany your turkey and go for low-fat options instead. Steamed vegetables are a good alternative.

Will I still lose weight over Christmas?

If you are sticking to your Mounjaro regime then the good news is that yes you probably will lose weight despite the festive treats.

This is because Mounjaro acts as reinforcement for your willpower and makes those high-fat sugary treats less appealing. This makes it more of a challenge to overindulge this Christmas.

Also, don’t beat yourself up about the odd indulgence during the Christmas period, Mounjaro will be there to get you back on track after the festive season.

Will I gain weight over Christmas?

If you struggle to maintain your healthy lifestyle and end up gaining weight during Christmas, don’t worry. With the right approach, you’ll be able to shed any extra pounds once the festivities are over.

The key is to stay consistent with your Mounjaro injections so that you can get back on track when the holiday season ends.

Before starting any weight loss medication, it’s essential to speak with a licensed healthcare professional who can provide tailored advice and ensure that your chosen treatment is safe for you.
