What is Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution

Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution is used to treat hereditary hair loss in men by preventing further hair loss and aiding hair regrowth. It contains finasteride and minoxidil and prevents the excess production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and improves blood flow to the hair follicles on your scalp.

The Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution is a specialised compounded topical treatment designed to combat hair loss and promote hair regrowth. This foam combines the potent effects of finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and minoxidil, a vasodilator that enhances blood flow to hair follicles. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride helps to halt hair thinning and stimulate new hair growth, while minoxidil increases nutrient and oxygen supply to the hair follicles, encouraging thicker, stronger hair. Together, these two active ingredients provide a comprehensive approach to managing androgenetic alopecia, making this solution an effective option for both men to improve their hair density and quality.

What are the active ingredients in Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution?

Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution contains the active ingredient finasteride and minoxidil. Finasteride belongs to a group of medicines known as Type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, while minoxidil was originally designed to combat hypertension and acts as a vasodilator.

What is Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution used for?

Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution is used to help prevent further hair loss in male pattern balding whilst also stimulating hair growth.

Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution contains the active ingredient finasteride. Finasteride belongs to a group of medicines known as Type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It is intended for use in men only. Finasteride is prescribed for the treatment of male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia. It helps to prevent further hair loss while the minoxidil encourages blood flow to the scalp helping new hairs to grow. Men with mild to moderate hair loss can benefit from using finasteride. Finasteride works by lowering the levels of DHT in the scalp. This reduction helps to reverse the balding process, promoting increased hair growth and preventing further hair loss.

  • It works best in men with hair loss or thinning at the top of the scalp.
  • Younger men, those who have been losing hair for a short period, or those with a small area of baldness are likely to experience the best results.
  • Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution is unlikely to benefit men who have been bald for many years or have a large area of hair loss.

Hereditary hair loss is recognizable by:

  • The pattern of hair loss (see diagrams above).
  • Gradual onset and progression.
  • Family history of hair loss.
  • No other symptoms are present with your hair loss.

How does hair grow?

Your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair grows from hair follicles located under your skin. A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stops growing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this, the hair falls out, and new, healthy hair begins to grow, repeating the cycle. The hairs on your scalp are always at different stages of this cycle, so it is normal to lose some scalp hair every day.

What is male pattern hair loss?

Male-pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning hair on the scalp, often leading to a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of the head. This condition is believed to result from a combination of genetic factors and the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT shortens the growth phase of hair and causes it to thin, leading to male-pattern hair loss. These changes can begin in some men as early as their 20s and tend to become more prevalent with age. Prolonged hair loss over time may result in permanent hair loss.

How does Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution work?

The Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% Hair Loss Solution works through a synergistic mechanism of action that targets both the hormonal and vascular causes of hair loss. Finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, plays a crucial role by preventing the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to hair follicle miniaturization and hair loss in androgenetic alopecia.

By lowering DHT levels in the scalp, finasteride helps to halt the progression of hair thinning and promotes the regrowth of stronger, healthier hair. Meanwhile, minoxidil, a vasodilator, enhances blood circulation to the hair follicles by widening the blood vessels. This increased blood flow delivers more oxygen and essential nutrients to the follicles, thereby stimulating hair growth and improving hair density. The 5% concentration of minoxidil in the solution maximizes its efficacy, encouraging the growth of thicker and more resilient hair.

Together, these two active ingredients offer a comprehensive and effective treatment for hair loss, addressing both the underlying hormonal imbalances and the need for enhanced follicular nutrition.

3. Frequency:

Does the Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution interact with any other medicines?

When using the Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution, it's important to be aware of potential drug interactions that may affect the efficacy or safety of the treatment. Here are some key points to consider:

Oral finasteride:

If you are already taking oral finasteride for hair loss or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), using a topical solution containing finasteride might increase the risk of systemic side effects, including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and other hormonal imbalances. It is essential to inform your healthcare provider if you are using both forms of finasteride.

Antihypertensive medications:

Minoxidil is a vasodilator and can lower blood pressure. If you are taking antihypertensive medications (blood pressure-lowering drugs), using a minoxidil-containing solution may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects, potentially leading to hypotension (abnormally low blood pressure). Regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.

Topical corticosteroids or other dermatological treatments:

The concurrent use of other topical medications, especially corticosteroids, retinoids, or other dermatological treatments on the scalp, may increase the risk of skin irritation or alter the absorption of minoxidil and finasteride. Consult your healthcare provider before combining these treatments.

Oral minoxidil:

If you are taking oral minoxidil for severe hypertension, adding a topical minoxidil solution may increase the risk of systemic side effects such as tachycardia (rapid heart rate) and fluid retention. Ensure your healthcare provider is aware of all forms of minoxidil you are using.

Other hair loss treatments:

Combining finasteride and minoxidil with other hair loss treatments like dutasteride, spironolactone, or hair growth supplements may lead to compounded effects or unexpected interactions. Always discuss with your healthcare provider before starting any additional treatments.

Anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs:

While there are no specific known interactions, patients using anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet drugs should be cautious as minoxidil's vasodilatory effects might theoretically impact clotting. Close monitoring and consultation with a healthcare provider are advised.

It's crucial to discuss all current medications, supplements, and medical conditions with your healthcare provider before starting the Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution to avoid potential interactions and ensure safe and effective use of the product.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.

  • Do not take Finasteride 0.1% Minoxidil 5% hair loss solution if you are already taking finasteride or dutasteride for a prostate problem called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
