What is Nytol?

Nytol is an over-the-counter sleep medication formulated with diphenhydramine hydrochloride as its active component. It is designed to assist individuals who struggle with sleeping difficulties, helping them achieve a more restful night’s sleep.

What is the active ingredient in Nytol?

The active ingredient in Nytol is diphenhydramine hydrochloride, which is an antihistamine used to promote sleep.

What is Nytol used for?

Nytol is used to alleviate temporary sleep disturbances, typically those lasting up to two weeks. These sleeping difficulties can arise from various factors, including stress, jet lag, or as side effects from other medications.

How does Nytol work?

Nytol functions by reducing brain arousal levels to facilitate easier sleep onset. It contains diphenhydramine hydrochloride, an antihistamine that blocks histamine from activating areas of the brain that promote wakefulness. Nytol is effective for those dealing with temporary sleeplessness, helping them not only fall asleep more easily but also enjoy a more restful sleep.

How do you use Nytol?

Adults and children aged 16 and older should take one or two Nytol tablets with water about 30 minutes before bedtime.

Who should not take Nytol?

Avoid taking Nytol if you:
  • Have had an allergic reaction to diphenhydramine hydrochloride or any other ingredients in Nytol.
  • Have a blockage in your stomach or gut, such as an ulcer.
Consult your doctor before using Nytol if you:
  • Suffer from asthma, bronchitis, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
  • Have narrow-angle glaucoma, which is a condition related to increased eye pressure.
  • Experience issues with an enlarged prostate or urinary retention.
  • Have moderate to severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Are affected by conditions such as myasthenia gravis, epilepsy, or seizure disorders.
  • Have a sugar intolerance or diabetes (either Type 1 or Type 2).
  • Are currently taking prescribed medications, especially tricyclic antidepressants, or have recently stopped taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs for depression) within the last two weeks, atropine (used for dilating pupils), or other medications that could cause drowsiness.
Additionally, be aware that after taking Nytol:
  • You should not drive or operate machinery.
  • You should avoid drinking alcohol as it can enhance the effects of Nytol.

What are the side effects with Nytol?

Nytol, which contains diphenhydramine hydrochloride, can cause several side effects, though not everyone will experience them. Common side effects include:
  1. Drowsiness: This is the intended effect to help induce sleep, but it can also persist into the next day.
  2. Dry Mouth: Users often report a noticeable dryness in the mouth after taking this medication.
  3. Dizziness: Feeling lightheaded or experiencing balance issues.
  4. Blurred Vision: Temporary visual disturbances may occur.
  5. Gastrointestinal Issues: Such as constipation or stomach upset.
Less common but more serious side effects can include:
  • Memory problems or confusion, especially in older adults.
  • Difficulty urinating or urinary retention.
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heart rate.
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight, leading to easier sunburn.
  • Severe allergic reactions, including rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
If you experience any severe side effects or if common side effects persist or worsen, it's important to contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Does Nytol interact with other medicines?

Nytol, which contains the active ingredient diphenhydramine, can interact with several other medications, potentially affecting how they work or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are some key interactions:

  1. Central Nervous System Depressants: Taking Nytol with other CNS depressants, such as benzodiazepines, opioids, muscle relaxants, or alcohol, can enhance drowsiness, dizziness, and impair cognitive function.
  2. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): Using Nytol with MAOIs can increase the risk of side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty breathing.
  3. Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs): Diphenhydramine can increase the sedative effects of TCAs and also add to anticholinergic side effects like dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention.
  4. Anticholinergic Drugs: When combined with drugs that have anticholinergic effects, such as some medications for Parkinson’s disease, IBS, or overactive bladder, the risk of side effects like dry mouth, urinary retention, and constipation increases.
  5. Other Antihistamines: Combining Nytol with other antihistamines, either over-the-counter or prescription, can compound side effects.
  6. Atropine: Interaction with atropine can enhance anticholinergic effects, increasing the likelihood of side effects like dry mouth, blurred vision, and increased heart rate.

It's important to consult your healthcare provider before starting Nytol if you are taking any other medications, to ensure safe use and avoid potential interactions.

Nytol FAQs

What is Nytol?

Nytol is an over-the-counter sleep aid that contains diphenhydramine hydrochloride as its active ingredient. It is designed to assist individuals experiencing difficulty sleeping, helping to secure a more restful night's sleep.

What is the purpose of Nytol?

Nytol is intended for the relief of temporary sleep disturbances, which include periods of sleeplessness lasting up to two weeks. Such difficulties can arise from stress, jet lag, or side effects from other medications.

How does Nytol function?

Nytol reduces brain arousal levels, making it easier to fall asleep. Its active component, diphenhydramine hydrochloride, is an antihistamine that blocks histamine from activating areas in the brain associated with arousal. Nytol Original and Nytol One-A-Night both contain diphenhydramine but in different dosages, with Nytol Original containing 25mg and Nytol One-A-Night 50mg. Nytol Herbal Simply Sleep contains no diphenhydramine, using valerian root extract instead to address sleep disorders, anxiety, and stress.

How long does Nytol last?

The effects typically last between four to six hours, and some users report feeling drowsy the following day. If drowsiness persists, avoid driving and operating heavy machinery.

How should Nytol be stored?
