What is Vaniqa?

Vaniqa Cream is a medication designed to reduce unwanted facial hair in women, specifically targeting areas such as the upper lip, chin, and neck. Before starting Vaniqa, it is advisable to undergo a medical examination with your doctor to rule out any underlying causes of excessive hair growth.

It’s important to understand that Vaniqa is not a permanent hair removal solution. However, many users have reported highly positive results and strongly recommend this treatment for managing facial hair.

What is the active ingredient in Vaniqa?

The active substance in Vaniqa Cream is eflornithine.

Each gram of cream contains 115 mg of eflornithine (as hydrochloride monohydrate).

What is Vaniqa used for?

Vaniqa contains the active ingredient eflornithine, which slows down hair growth by affecting a specific enzyme involved in hair production. It is used to reduce excessive facial hair (hirsutism) in women aged 18 and older.

How does Vaniqa work?

Vaniqa contains the active ingredient eflornithine, which works by inhibiting an enzyme called ornithine decarboxylase. This enzyme is involved in the production of hair. By reducing the activity of this enzyme, Vaniqa slows down the growth of hair. It is important to note that Vaniqa does not remove hair but rather slows its growth, leading to a reduction in the appearance of unwanted facial hair over time. Regular use of Vaniqa can help manage and reduce excessive hair growth on the face.

How do you use Vaniqa?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has instructed. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

  • Apply twice a day, at least 8 hours apart.
  • If irritation occurs (e.g., stinging or burning), reduce the application to once daily until the irritation subsides. If it persists, contact your doctor.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes after shaving or using any other hair removal method before applying Vaniqa. It may sting or burn if applied to cut or irritated skin.
  • Clean and dry the areas where you will apply the cream.
  • Apply a thin layer of cream and rub it in thoroughly until no visible residue remains on the treated areas.
  • Avoid washing these areas of skin for at least 4 hours after applying the cream.
  • Wash your hands after applying the cream.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes before applying makeup or sunscreen to the same areas.
  • When applying to the face, avoid contact with your eyes, the inside of your nose, or your mouth. If you accidentally get Vaniqa in these areas, rinse well with water.

Vaniqa is not a depilatory cream, so you may need to continue your hair removal method, such as shaving or plucking.

It may take up to 8 weeks to see results. It is important to continue using the cream. If you see no improvement after 4 months, contact your doctor. If you stop using Vaniqa, your original hair growth may return within 8 weeks.

If You Use More Vaniqa Than You Should: If you apply too much cream, it is unlikely to harm you. However, if you or someone else accidentally swallows Vaniqa, contact your doctor immediately.

If You Forget to Use Vaniqa: Apply it as soon as you remember, but ensure at least 8 hours have passed before the next application.

If You Stop Using Vaniqa: To maintain the reduction in hair growth, continue using Vaniqa as directed. If you stop, your original hair growth may return.

If you have any further questions about using this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not use Vaniqa?

Do Not Use Vaniqa:

  • If you are allergic to eflornithine or any of the other ingredients in this medicine.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Vaniqa.
  • Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions you may have, especially those related to your kidneys or liver.
  • If you are unsure whether or not to use this medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Excessive hair growth may be due to underlying conditions. Talk to your doctor if you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), specific hormone-producing tumors, or if you take medicines that can induce hair growth, such as cyclosporine (post-organ transplants), glucocorticoids (for rheumatic or allergic diseases), minoxidil (for high blood pressure), phenobarbitone (for seizures), phenytoin (for seizures), or hormone replacement therapy with male hormone-like effects.

Children and Adolescents:

  • Vaniqa is not recommended for use in anyone younger than 18 years of age.

Pregnancy and Breast-feeding:

  • Do not use Vaniqa if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. You should use an alternative method to manage your facial hair if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Driving and Using Machines:

  • Vaniqa is not expected to have any effect on your ability to drive or use machines.

Ingredients and Allergic Reactions:

  • Vaniqa contains cetostearyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, which may cause local skin reactions (e.g., contact dermatitis).
  • Vaniqa also contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216),

This will help ensure that there are no interactions or adverse effects from using multiple treatments on the same skin area.

Vaniqa cream FAQs

What is Vaniqa and what is it used for?

Vaniqa Cream is a medication used to reduce unwanted facial hair in women. It is specifically used to treat excessive hair growth on the upper lip, chin, and neck areas. Before using Vaniqa, it is recommended to have a medical examination with your doctor to rule out any underlying causes of excessive hair growth.

How does Vaniqa Cream remove facial hair?

Vaniqa Cream works by targeting the enzymes responsible for hair growth inside the hair follicle. The active ingredient, eflornithine, blocks these enzymes, slowing down the production of new hair. Over time, this reduction in hair production leads to smaller and less noticeable hairs and, in some cases, can even stop hair growth altogether. However, Vaniqa does not eliminate hair or permanently prevent it from growing back. Regular use can significantly slow down hair production, resulting in a noticeable reduction of facial hair.

Does Vaniqa work on coarse hair?

Yes, Vaniqa can be effective on coarse hair present on the face, such as on the upper lip or chin. Although it does not permanently remove hair or prevent it from growing, regular use can significantly slow down hair production, resulting in a reduction of coarse hair over time.

How long does Vaniqa take to work?

The effectiveness of Vaniqa Cream varies from person to person, but most users will begin to see positive results within four to eight weeks of consistent use. Some users may notice a change in hair growth as soon as one week after starting treatment, while others may take longer. It is important to use Vaniqa consistently and regularly for at least four months before considering an alternative treatment.

Are there alternatives to Vaniqa?

There are several non-prescription alternatives for facial hair removal, including shaving, waxing, plucking, bleaching, threading, and laser and electrolysis treatments. Your GP may also suggest losing excess weight or taking a contraceptive pill to control hormone levels. If these alternatives do not work, your GP may refer you to a specialist for further advice and treatment.

How do I use Vaniqa Cream?

To use Vaniqa Cream:

  • Start by washing and drying the area where you want to apply Vaniqa.
  • Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area and rub it in well.
  • Do not wash the treated area for at least 4 hours after applying the cream.
  • You can apply makeup or sunscreen over the treated area once the cream has dried.
  • Use Vaniqa Cream twice a day, at least 8 hours apart.
  • Continue to use your regular hair removal method while using Vaniqa.
  • If you experience any stinging, burning, or skin irritation, reduce the frequency of applications to once daily. If irritation persists, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

How long should I use Vaniqa Cream?

Use Vaniqa Cream consistently for 4 to 8 weeks to see noticeable results. You should continue using your regular hair removal method while using Vaniqa. If you don't see any improvement after four months, consult with your doctor or pharmacist for further guidance.

Can Vaniqa be used on body hair?

Vaniqa Cream has only been clinically tested for use on the face and neck and is not recommended for use on other areas of the body.

What are the ingredients in Vaniqa?

The active substance in Vaniqa Cream is eflornithine. Each gram of cream contains 115 mg of eflornithine (as hydrochloride monohydrate). Other ingredients include cetostearyl alcohol, macrogol cetostearyl ether, dimeticone, glyceryl stearate, macrogol stearate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), liquid paraffin, phenoxyethanol, propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), purified water, and stearyl alcohol.

  • Skin reactions from ingrowing hair
  • Hair loss
  • A burning, stinging, or tingling feeling
  • Dry skin

Can I use Vaniqa during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

The potential risk of eflornithine use during pregnancy is unknown, so it is recommended not to use Vaniqa if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Vaniqa is also not recommended for use while breastfeeding. Seek other hair removal techniques, such as tweezing, waxing, or shaving.
