What is Zolmitriptan and what is it used for?
Zolmitriptan 2.5 mg Tablets are used to effectively relieve migraine attacks. The active ingredient, zolmitriptan, is a type of medication known as a triptan. Triptans are designed to target migraines and alleviate symptoms by reducing inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain. What is a migraine?
In the UK, migraines affect about 25% of women and 8% of men. They can be hereditary, meaning if a relative suffers from migraines, you might be more prone to them. Triggers for migraines can include poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, too much caffeine, stress, lack of sleep, or menstrual cycles. Migraines can severely disrupt daily life with symptoms such as nausea, light sensitivity, intense throbbing pain, and heightened intolerance to noises and smells. A migraine may last a few hours to three days, and post-migraine fatigue can last several days.
How does Zolmitriptan work?
Zolmitriptan works by targeting the widening of blood vessels in the brain, which is thought to cause the throbbing pain of migraines. It belongs to a group of medications called serotonin agonists that stimulate serotonin receptors in the brain to narrow these blood vessels, thereby relieving pain. For best results, take Zolmitriptan at the onset of a migraine or during an attack. It does not prevent migraines but can be used alongside other preventative treatments.
