What is Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg?

Imigran Nasal Spray is a fast-acting medication designed to treat acute migraine attacks. It contains the active ingredient sumatriptan, a triptan that works by targeting serotonin receptors in the brain to alleviate migraine symptoms. The nasal spray formulation allows for rapid absorption through the nasal mucosa, providing quick relief from headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Typically administered as one spray into one nostril, it can be used up to twice within a 24-hour period if needed. Imigran Nasal Spray is especially useful for those who prefer a non-oral option or have difficulty taking tablets during a migraine. However, it should be used with caution in individuals with certain health conditions, and consulting a healthcare provider is recommended to ensure its suitability.

What is the active ingredient in Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg?

The active ingredient contained in Imigran Nasal Spray is sumatriptan.

What is Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg used for?

Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg is used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks. It contains sumatriptan, a medication from the triptan class that specifically targets serotonin receptors in the brain. By doing so, it helps alleviate common migraine symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. The nasal spray formulation allows for rapid absorption through the nasal passages, providing quick relief. It is typically used when a migraine attack starts and can be administered up to twice in a 24-hour period if needed.

How does Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg work?

Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg works by delivering sumatriptan, a selective serotonin receptor agonist, directly to the nasal mucosa. While the exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, they are believed to be triggered by the dilation of blood vessels in the brain, leading to throbbing pain. Sumatriptan, as a serotonin agonist, mimics the effects of serotonin—a neurotransmitter that can narrow these dilated blood vessels and reduce the associated pain. By stimulating specific serotonin receptors in the brain, sumatriptan alleviates the throbbing pain of a migraine. The nasal spray is most effective when used at the onset of a migraine attack, although it can still provide relief if used later in the episode. After application to one nostril, it generally takes about 30 minutes to start working. Imigran Nasal Spray does not prevent migraines but can be safely used in conjunction with preventive treatments, such as propranolol.

How do you use Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg?

When should you use Imigran Nasal Spray? Use Imigran Nasal Spray only after your migraine headache begins. It is not intended for preventing a migraine. For best results, use the spray as soon as you feel a migraine coming on, although it can still be effective if used later during the attack. How much Imigran Nasal Spray should you use?
  • Adults (18 to 65 years): The typical dose is one 20 mg spray into one nostril. In some cases, one 10 mg spray into one nostril may be sufficient. Do not use more than two sprays within a 24-hour period.
  • Adolescents (12 to 17 years): The usual dose is one 10 mg spray into one nostril.
  • Children under 12 years: Imigran Nasal Spray is not recommended for children under 12.
  • Older Adults (over 65 years): Imigran Nasal Spray is not recommended for those over 65.
What should you do if symptoms start to return? If your symptoms return after using Imigran Nasal Spray, you may use a second spray after 2 hours. Do not exceed two sprays within a 24-hour period. What if the first spray doesn’t work? If the first dose does not relieve your migraine, do not use a second spray or any other Imigran product for the same attack. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further advice. What if you use too much Imigran Nasal Spray? Do not use more than two sprays within a 24-hour period. Overuse may lead to adverse effects. If you have used more than the recommended dose, contact your doctor for guidance. How to use Imigran Nasal Spray:
  1. Remove the spray from the blister packaging just before use. Ensure the spray is intact and sealed.
  2. Find a comfortable position; sitting may be preferable.
  3. Blow your nose if it feels blocked or if you have a cold.
  4. Hold the spray with your fingers and thumb, as shown in the guide, without pressing the blue plunger.
  5. Block one nostril by pressing a finger on the side of your nose. The choice of nostril is up to you.
  6. Insert the nozzle into the other nostril as far as comfortable, about 1 cm or ½ inch. Breathe out gently through your mouth.
  7. Keep your head upright and close your mouth. As you begin to breathe in gently through your nose, press the blue plunger firmly with your thumb. The plunger may be stiff and you might hear a click.
  8. After spraying, remove the nozzle and your finger from your nose. Keep your head upright and breathe gently in through your nose and out through your mouth for 10-20 seconds. This helps the medicine stay in your nose.
  9. Dispose of the used spray safely and hygienically.
If you have any questions or need further assistance with using Imigran Nasal Spray, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not use Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg?

Do not use Imigran if:

  • You use Imigran frequently. Overuse may worsen your headaches. Inform your doctor if this is the case, as they may suggest stopping Imigran.
If you experience chest pain or tightness after using Imigran:
  • These symptoms may be intense but usually resolve quickly. If they persist or become severe, seek medical help immediately.
Pregnancy and Breast-Feeding
  • If you are pregnant, suspect you might be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor before using this medication. There is limited information on the safety of Imigran during pregnancy, but there is currently no evidence suggesting an increased risk of birth defects. Your doctor will help determine if Imigran is suitable for you during pregnancy.
  • Avoid breastfeeding for 12 hours after using Imigran. If you pump breast milk during this period, discard it and do not feed it to your baby.
Driving and Using Machinery

Does Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg interact with other medicines?

Inform Your Doctor or Pharmacist
  • Let your doctor or pharmacist know if you are currently taking, have recently taken, or plan to take any other medicines, including herbal products or over-the-counter medications.
  • Certain medications should not be used with Imigran, while others may cause adverse effects when combined with it. Specifically, inform your doctor if you are taking:
    • Ergotamine or similar medications (e.g., methysergide) used for migraine treatment. Do not use Imigran concurrently with these medicines. Cease using these medications at least 24 hours before using Imigran. Avoid taking any ergotamine-containing medicines again for at least 6 hours after using Imigran.
    • Other triptans/5-HT1 receptor agonists (e.g., naratriptan, rizatriptan, zolmitriptan) used for migraine relief. Do not use Imigran with these medications. Stop using them at least 24 hours before using Imigran, and wait at least 24 hours before taking another triptan/5-HT1 receptor agonist after using Imigran.
    • SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) or SNRIs (Serotonin Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors), which are used to treat depression. Combining Imigran with these medications can lead to serotonin syndrome, which may cause symptoms such as restlessness, confusion, sweating, hallucinations, increased reflexes, muscle spasms, shivering, increased heartbeat, and shaking. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
    • MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) used for depression. Do not use Imigran if you have taken these within the last 2 weeks.
    • St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum). Herbal remedies containing St John’s Wort may increase the likelihood of side effects when used with Imigran.

Imigran Nasal Spray 10mg FAQs

What is Imigran and what is it used for?

Imigran Nasal Spray is a medication designed to provide relief from migraine symptoms. It contains sumatriptan, a type of 'triptan' medicine widely used to treat migraines. Ideal for those who cannot swallow tablets, it is available in single-use sprays of 10mg or 20mg.

How does Imigran work?

The exact cause of migraines isn't fully understood, but they are believed to be linked to the dilation of blood vessels in the brain, leading to throbbing pain. Sumatriptan, the active ingredient in Imigran, is a serotonin agonist. It works by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain, causing the blood vessels to constrict and thus relieving the migraine pain. For best results, use Imigran Nasal Spray at the onset of a migraine, though it can still be effective if used later in the attack.

What is a migraine?

Migraines are severe headaches that affect about 25% of women and 8% of men in the UK. They can be triggered by various factors, including genetics, alcohol, poor diet, caffeine, stress, lack of sleep, and in some cases, hormonal changes in women. Symptoms often include intense throbbing pain, nausea, and heightened sensitivity to light, noise, and smells. Migraines may last a few hours to three days, with lingering fatigue afterward.

What are the alternatives to Imigran?

Aside from Imigran, there are several alternatives for treating and preventing migraines. For initial relief, you might consider over-the-counter options such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, or Migraleve. For more advanced treatments, Vydura is a newly developed option available through The Independent Pharmacy.

What are the warnings for Imigran?

Imigran Nasal Spray is not suitable if you have had a heart attack or stroke, have pre-existing circulation issues, high blood pressure, liver disease, or are taking MAOIs or other triptans. Consult your doctor if you have a high risk of heart disease, a history of epilepsy, or experience chest tightness after using Imigran.

How should Imigran be used?

For best results, use Imigran Nasal Spray at the start of a migraine attack. Administer 10-20mg into one nostril. If needed, a second dose can be taken after at least two hours. Follow these steps: blow your nose if needed, hold the spray, insert the nozzle into one nostril, block the other nostril with a finger, and press the blue plunger while inhaling gently. After use, breathe in gently through your nose for 10 seconds and then discard the used spray.

What are the ingredients in Imigran?

Imigran Nasal Spray contains the active ingredient sumatriptan. Inactive ingredients include potassium dihydrogen phosphate, dibasic sodium phosphate anhydrous, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, and purified water.

What are the side effects of Imigran?

Possible side effects include chest or throat tightness, tingling sensations, nasal or throat irritation, nosebleeds, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, hot flushes, aches, and shortness of breath. If you experience any concerning effects, stop using the spray and consult your doctor or pharmacist.
