What are Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets?

Rizatriptan 10 mg Orodispersible Tablets are a type of medication used to treat acute migraine attacks. They contain the active ingredient rizatriptan, which is a member of the triptan class of drugs. Triptans are designed to specifically target and relieve migraine symptoms by acting on serotonin receptors in the brain.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Form and Administration: These tablets are orodispersible, meaning they dissolve quickly in the mouth without the need for water. This can be particularly convenient for those who may have difficulty swallowing pills.
  • Purpose: Rizatriptan works by constricting dilated blood vessels in the brain and reducing inflammation, which helps alleviate migraine symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Usage: They are intended for use at the onset of a migraine attack. They do not prevent migraines but are effective in providing relief once symptoms begin.

Rizatriptan 10 mg Orodispersible Tablets are typically available by prescription and are suitable for use in adults experiencing migraine episodes.

What is the active ingredient in Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets?

Rizatriptan tablets contain the active ingredient:Rizatriptan benzoate 10 mg.

What are Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets used for?

Rizatriptan 10 mg Orodispersible Tablets are used to treat acute migraine attacks. They are designed to provide relief from the symptoms associated with migraines, which may include:
  • Severe headache or throbbing pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
The active ingredient, rizatriptan, belongs to a class of medications known as triptans. Triptans work by targeting serotonin receptors in the brain, which helps to reduce the dilation of blood vessels and alleviate the pain and other symptoms of a migraine attack. These tablets are specifically formulated to dissolve quickly in the mouth, making them convenient for immediate use, especially when water may not be readily available. They are intended for use during an active migraine attack and are not used for the prevention of migraines.

How do Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets work?

Rizatriptan 10 mg Orodispersible Tablets work by targeting the serotonin receptors in the brain. Here's how they operate:
  • Serotonin Receptor Activation: Rizatriptan is a triptan medication that stimulates specific serotonin receptors (5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors) in the brain.
  • Vasoconstriction: By activating these receptors, rizatriptan helps to constrict or narrow the dilated blood vessels in the brain, which are thought to contribute to migraine pain.
  • Pain Relief: This narrowing of blood vessels reduces the pressure and inflammation, leading to a decrease in the intensity of the migraine headache and alleviating associated symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light, and sound.
  • Rapid Dissolution: The orodispersible formulation allows the tablet to dissolve quickly on the tongue without the need for water, which facilitates faster absorption and quicker relief during an acute migraine attack.
These tablets are most effective when taken at the onset of a migraine attack and do not prevent future migraines but provide relief from the current episode.

How do you take Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets?

Rizatriptan is prescribed to treat migraine attacks. It should be taken as soon as you notice the onset of a migraine headache. It is not intended for the prevention of migraines. Always follow your doctor's instructions when taking Rizatriptan. If you are unsure about any aspect of its use, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Dosage Instructions:
  • The standard recommended dose is 10 mg.
  • Rizatriptan comes in the form of an orodispersible tablet that dissolves in your mouth.
  • To use, remove the tablet from its blister pack with dry hands and place it on your tongue. It will dissolve and can be swallowed with saliva.
  • This form is convenient when liquids are unavailable or to prevent nausea and vomiting that might occur with tablets taken with water.
Special Considerations:
  • If you are taking propranolol or have kidney or liver issues, use the 5 mg dose of Rizatriptan.
  • Maintain a gap of at least 2 hours between taking propranolol and Rizatriptan, and do not exceed 2 doses within a 24-hour period.
If Migraine Returns Within 24 Hours:
  • If symptoms reappear within 24 hours, you may take an additional dose of Rizatriptan. Ensure that you wait at least 2 hours between doses.
  • If the initial dose does not relieve the migraine, do not take a second dose for the same attack. It is likely that Rizatriptan will work during a subsequent migraine attack.
Maximum Dosage:
  • Do not take more than 2 doses of Rizatriptan within a 24-hour period. This equates to a maximum of 20 mg in total.
  • Always allow at least 2 hours between doses.
Overdose:
  • If you accidentally take more Rizatriptan than prescribed, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Bring the medicine pack with you.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, fainting, and a slow heart rate.
If you have further questions about using Rizatriptan, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not take Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets?

Do not take Rizatriptan if you:
  • Are allergic to rizatriptan benzoate or any other ingredients in this medicine, please refer to the patient information leaflet.
  • Have moderately severe or severe high blood pressure, or mild high blood pressure that is not controlled by medication.

  • Rizatriptan is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years due to a lack of experience with this age group.
Patients Over 65 Years:
  • There is limited information on the safety and effectiveness of Rizatriptan in individuals over 65 years of age.
Food and Drink:
  • Rizatriptan may take longer to work if taken after food. It is ideally taken on an empty stomach, but it can still be effective if taken after eating.
Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and Fertility:
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Rizatriptan.
  • Data suggest no increased risk of birth defects during the first trimester of pregnancy, but the effects of taking Rizatriptan later in pregnancy are not fully known.
  • If breastfeeding, consider postponing for 12 hours after treatment to avoid passing the medicine to your baby.
Driving and Using Machines:
  • Rizatriptan may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If affected, avoid driving or operating machinery.
Aspartame Warning:
  • Rizatriptan contains aspartame (E951), which includes phenylalanine. This may be harmful to individuals with phenylketonuria.

Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets FAQs

What is Rizatriptan and what is it used for?

Rizatriptan, the generic name for Maxalt Wafers, is prescribed to treat migraine headaches. It is a 5HT1 agonist that works by reducing blood vessel swelling in the brain by targeting serotonin receptors. Each box of Rizatriptan 10mg contains six orodispersible tablets that dissolve quickly on the tongue, making them suitable for those who prefer not to swallow large tablets.

What is a migraine?

The exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, though they are often linked to changes in brain chemicals. They may also be triggered by certain foods or drinks. Migraines are common, particularly among women, and can be hereditary. Symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, light sensitivity, and more. Some people experience warning signs known as an aura before the migraine starts.

How does Rizatriptan work?

Rizatriptan is a 5HT1-receptor agonist, also known as a triptan. It works by stimulating serotonin in the brain to relieve the headache associated with migraines. It is most effective when taken at the first sign of a migraine. Do not take other triptans or ergotamine while using Rizatriptan.

Are there alternatives to Rizatriptan?

Yes, there are several alternatives for migraine treatment. At medicalmojo.co.uk, you can find both prescription and over-the-counter options. Your doctor might also recommend non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like naproxen. Over-the-counter options include paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, and Migraleve.

How should I take Rizatriptan?

Take Rizatriptan as soon as you notice a migraine beginning. Place one tablet on your tongue and let it dissolve completely. If the medication does not work, wait at least 2 hours before taking a second dose. Do not exceed 2 tablets in a 24-hour period. If you are on propranolol or have liver or kidney issues, use the 5mg dose of Rizatriptan and maintain at least a 2-hour gap between propranolol and Rizatriptan.

What warnings should I be aware of?

Do not use Rizatriptan if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, have high blood pressure, a history of heart attack or stroke, severe liver or kidney problems, or are on MAO inhibitors.
